Hi soaplady. Been a while since I've been in here. Can't remember my screen name...anyway my question is about my mothers salle mae student loan. She passed away last month and I have been unsuccessful at locating a promisory note for student loan(s) to determine wether or not the loan out lives her death. Only thing I have found so far is a loan consolidation disclosure statement and repayment schedule dated clear back in 2004. The guarantor of consolidation loan says UNITED STUDENT AID FUNDS and the consolidating lender is SLM EDUCATION LOAN CORP. Looks like 12 loans were consolidated from former SALLIE MAE TRUST. 6 of the 12 were subsidized and 6 were unsubsidized. I thought that the loans were originally stafford but not sure. If student loans are consolidated do they then become private loans? I wan't to know a little bit about what I'm talking about first before i notify Salle Mae of her passing. Especially since I don't have original or possibly the latest promisory note. Thanks if you or anyone else can help me.

Simply contact Sallie Mae and send them a copy of her death certificate. Federal loans stay as federal loans...these are FFELP loans. The loans are cancelled upon death. I am sorry for your loss.
