Going to be changing banks

We are going to be opening another account very soon and I'm wondering some names of some banks that might be good for us. We are in Maryland. I currently have an account with my ex-husband at Provident. Does anyone know if other banks offer free checking and access to accounts online? Or are all banks like that these days?
OH, and I want to be able to have the debit/credit card tied to my account too like Provident offers.

Thanks!

I just opened up at Washington Mutual, they have free checking and online access, and also where you can transfer from one account to another online. ( I have 2 checking accounts)

But I just opened them up last week due to having to close my bank account.

I am sure more people will be around to offer more advice.

haha okay well no offense either of you must not be in CHEX, and if you are, your account will be disappearing sooner than later.

And Sull! I'm from MD, there is no WaMu except maybe mortgages however, for reasonable options on opening accounts, if you don't have CHEX issues, then try Susquehanna or Wachovia, of course, Bank of America is everywhere (pretty much every damn corner so it seems)..

Good Luck, anything has to be better than Provident because their ugly little Mastermoney cards drove me crazy and their online banking is total garbage at least with a bigger major bank if you can get in, you'll find that you at least can see your online banking in real time.

GOOD LUCK!!

I appreciate the input VBM, I was simply responding to the CAPS on "not", that's all.

No harm, really Smile

Hey i- thanks for the feedback on the banks. You are right about provident bank you cannot see banking in live time which is a real pita!
The account will be in mine and my boyfriend's name so i can get off my (soon to be) ex husband's account. Trying to divide our assets up some.
Anyway, I'm not sure about boyfriend's banking history (and he is from Illinois) so I'm not sure how easy he will be able to get a bank here in MD. I think HE is thinking it will be more easier then what it will be.
We will see...

Thanks!

I've been with Woodforest Bank for about 9 or 10 months now, I'm pleased with them overall, they provide online banking and the usual perks. So far so good!

I'm actually really pleased with BofA. I AM on Chex and they were able to open an account for me online. So, even if your boyfriend is on Chex, there shouldn't be a problem. You just need his vitals....driver's lisence, social security#, etc. Then you get a signature card mailed to you that you can drop off at your closest branch. My account is free as long as I have direct deposit. I don't mind that, since I hate having to go to the bank to deposit a check.

Thanks everyone. We went with Provident bank for now... but probably will consider something else in the future once we move.

By the way, when we were at the bank opening up the account-- I heard them talking about the CHEX systems. Prior to this board, I had NO idea what that was-- so it was kind of cool to "know" what they were talking about. LOL

PostPosted: Fri Aug 15, 2008 7:46 pm Subject: getting someone out of your account

Hello everyone,
I too have a Wamu account and have been happy with their services and the convenience of their online banking. I also like their overdrawn protection plan. However I advise to be very careful when adding someone to your account. I added my ex-husband when we first got married since he was a member of a credit union which was not open on Saturdays. After the divorce I tried taking him off my account and even though I was told via phone I could do this when I got to the branch they said I had to close the account and open a new one. This seems easy enough however due to the age of the account I had really good overdrawn protection coverage which u don't get with a new account they actually start off at 100.00. I was reluctant to close it because this really came in handy when things got though with money. This week my ex husband went to the bank, closed my account himself and stole money from me. In other words even if you are the primary account holder you may not remove people from your account once you added them, in fact even if they want to be removed they can't however they have the power to close your account and steal from you with out even a phone call to you from the bank!

If he had agreed to be removed, they would have done so but yes if he does not agree they will not remove him once he is added.

The bad part is that WAMU will for certain report you to chexsystems if the account went negative
