Sad Hi I was a lurker on the other chexvictims site for quite a while before it closed down. To tell the truth I found this site by searching for MCA because I felt that she was helping me to find the strength to open another bank account. I'll try to be as brief as possible with my story.... In December, 1999 my husband and I were notified by our bank that our checking acct. was being closed. Don't remember the exact wording but we had outstanding nsf chgs. totaling about $750. My husband had just been diagnosed with cancer, prior to that our medical bills got way out of hand with no insurance and trying to find out what was wrong with him. I don't remember any mention of Checksystems in the bank letter, but around Jan. 2000 we tried to open another acct. with different bank and were denied due to a "problem with another bank", they did not know what it was. Consequently, we have used check cashing places since or my daughter's account (signing checks over to her). My husband did pass away in June, 2007. I guess my real question is whether I would have a chance in hell of opening an account with a bank now as I am hoping that any record we had with Checksystems would hopefully be gone by now as it has been 8 years. I have walked into several banks in the last few months to open an account but then fear of denial takes over and I walk out without even trying. Pretty bad for a grown woman. Anyways, thanks for reading and I am really hoping that any advice I receive will help me get over this paralyzing fear. By the way, with all of our medical bills over the years we never did pay off the outstanding balance to the bank, but I don't remember them ever sending it to collections. I live in Florida and I have seen that the list of non-checksystems banks is not very large. Thanks for being a board full of encouragement and good advice.

Hi MM, I am very sorry about your husband. I think you should try it because I believe that Chexsystems comes off your record after five years. Good luck to you.

Yes you should try opening an account because as sassnlucy stated that chexsystems only stays on your report for 5 years and you said it has been since 8 years give it a try.

You should definitely try getting a new account. Also, go back to that bank that closed your account and ask if they can cut those fees in half. If you tell them the circumstances, I think they will work with you. What bank was it that reported you?

The bank that reported us is called Capital City bank. As far as I know they are only located in Florida. At the time my husband explained the situation but they were not very sympathetic and we just had to decide what to pay in terms of importance. I think that they gave us 30 days to pay our outstanding balance but were going to close the acct. regardless. Should I try to get a checksystems report based on an account closed 8 years ago, or do you think that would be stirring up the pot so to speak?

hi mmdd7....my list of banks and credit unions are now posted on my site. I will help you in any way I can. The list is updated and there are some new ones that were recently added. What part of FL are you in?

One more thing...you should have been removed from chexsystems after 5 yrs...if you were not then you need to write to them and request removal.

hi, so sorry about your husband. do you have a bank of america where you live? you can open an acct online, it pretty simple, i did it a year ago, and i had some stuff at chex systems, i don't now, but i did. try that. you donot have to talk to anyone if that is what you are worried about, i think it is fine, especially after 8 years. good luck!
