What are the odds of presently being in a Chapter 13 bankruptcy and being able to open up a checking account at a credit union? I've been told that credit unions check your credit reports. Also, I'm on chexsystems. I live in Ohio.

As your name is in Checksystem, you will not be able to open a new checking account.

But you can still open a new checking account with a credit union, if it does not verify your new account with ChexSystems. But in such a circumstance don’t rush. Before giving your money to a non-ChexSystems credit union, please verify that: -

The concerned credit union is National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF) insured. You can check whether a Credit Union is insured by NCUSIF or not from http://www.ncua.gov/indexdata.html .

In addition, if you really want to have a checking account after chapter-13 bankruptcy then you can verify with your credit union whether it issues a Secured Checking Account. If such a provision is there then you can secure around $1000 to $2000 as guarantee for your checks that you will write every month. Then the credit union will provide unsecured checking account to you after a period of six months to one year.

There are many banks that do not use Chexsystems. These are real banks, not internet banks, and they are normal accounts.

MCA is our banking expert here, she has helped thousands of people find a checking account while on chexsystems.

PM her and she can help you find a bank or CU that will work for you.

Apple Creek uses chexsystems now and has for some time

Provident Bank and Fifth Third Bank have second chance checking but many people are denied these accounts due to what the chexsystems report actually says... account abuse , fraud etc

The other banks that you ahve listed will generally deny those on chexsystems. yes there are times when they will amke exceptions. Many branch managers will make exceptions but again it depends on what the report actually says, how old the report is etc.

There are many pre-paids out there. Some are better than others when it comes to the fees that they charge. I would never recommend a pre-paid but there are some people out there that prefer them to a regular checking account. I believe as long as you can get a regular checking account, there is no reason to use pre-paids. It is not a real bank. The card is issued by a bank but account now is not a bank

yw anytime there is an affiliate program in relation to a pre-card, it is definitely not a bank. Many of these places try to advertise as if they are.

Sub: #12 Are there any banks in CT?
Replied on 12-18-2008, 06:56 PM

Does anyone know of any banks that may help me in CT? I have not claimed Chap 13, but I think I am about to do so. I have lost my checking account after losing my job in Jan '08 and having no income (the bank kept paying my monthly bills after I told them to stop.) I was overdrawn by $900 and have only been able to pay a third of it back. I just started working in October and trying to keep my house from going into foreclosure, so any monies went to that. I still owe my last bank $600. I just opened a new account with Bank of America with my new tenant's rent check of $400, but then that check BOUNCED! And they closed the account immediately, even though I showed up the next day with $1,000. Am I completely out of luck here? Help!

CT is a hard one. Most banks and credit unions there use chexsystems. Many people are using the checking account with Fidelity there. Which bank reported you to chexsystems?

I have an account with accountnow. They give you a checking account number and a routing number. I use them for 1 reason... I can not charge more than I have. If you go to a traditional bank if you do not have the money, they will let the fees go through highest to lowest and charge as many fees as they can. I also have a savings account with ING. These work for me. I get a credit/debit card with account now and can add up to 10,000 to my card. All for a fee of $10/ month. Most banks charge more that that with NSF fees and and minimum balance fees.

Look into that as well it may work for you. I have heard Telohio accepts chexsystems people. But I am not sure. Hope this help. Also heard Wamu doesn't check.
