I received my chexsystems report - what do I do now?
Under "Reported Information" it lists a bank account that I had in another state. It gived my name and old address, old drivers license etc. Although I don't have record of the account number, I am sure that it is my old bank account.
Under "Date Reported" it lists 6/9/04.
Under "Reported For" it lists "NON-SUFFICIENT FUNDS (NSF) ACTIVITY.
Under "Debt Reported" it lists "ChexSystems has no debt information available. May we suggest that you contact the source of the information to determine whether or not a debt was owed."
There is no dollar amount listed anywhere.
I know I don't owe anything because I closed the account. I THINK that I might have had a check come through after the fact, but I made good on it soon thereafter. But I did NOT leave the bank on good terms, the manager and I had what you could call a "personality conflict". I live 2,000 miles away and can't exactly pop in and fix this.
So what do I do? I would like to open a new account in my new state rather than having to bank in another states bank and do all of my deposits by mail, etc. I was rejected by a local bank here due to what showed on ChexSystems.

Have you looked at MCA's site? There may be a nearby bank that will allow you to open an account.

I want to fix this problem permanently if possible. I know that there are accounts I can open and ways I can do this (husband open an account and then add me on later, etc) but I want to just get this resolved now if possible.
Or is there no way to fix this?

There is no guarantee for removal with chexsystems. They are a credit reporting agency and the only way they will remove is if the reporting bank instructs them to or if you file a dispute and attempt removal in this way.
Paying off a debt will not remove you as well. The report will not be removed for 5 years. As far as your husband opening an account and adding you later, most banks will still run your name and will still deny you.

so at this point I have 3 options ... dispute with ChexSystems, contact the bank directly, or wait for 5 years. Is that correct?
If I dispute (which would be my first choice), what would the basis of my dispute be? That the account was resolved, no money owed, etc?
If they deny my dispute, my second choice would be to wait the 5 years. So that would be waiting until 6/9/09, correct?

I received my report as well. . . under "reported information" it has "no information found" but under "inquiries" it has several companies listed including DP Bureau, Cash Net, etc. Could these inquiries keep me from getting a savings account?????

Yes inquiries can be just as bad as having a negative report with chexsystems. It can cause them to " flag " you account as suspicious and many times a bank or credit union will deny you on that basis alone. If they are inquiries that were initiated by you, they will not remove them unless you can prove that they did not have your permission to do so.
Inquiries Initiated By Consumer Action refers to inquiries resulting from a transaction initiated by you. These include applying for a credit card or completing an application at a financial institution. Please note that the inquiries are part of your credit history and may be included in our reports to others. These inquiries can be viewed for ninety days up to three years.
We had stong winds from the Hurricane in Texas and millions were without electric, some fro weeks.
Which credit union is denying you?

yes they definitely use chexsystems. I would maybe try a credit union that does not use it at all ..here is one from my list there in Austin
Austin Telco Credit Union

We do not utilize ChexSystems in the account opening process, however if we have to close an account that has been overdrawn and charge the account off as a loss, then we do report to ChexSystems and the Credit Bureau.
Email 8-13-08
Our requirements for opening a second chance checking account are as follows:
• You must live, work, worship, or go to school in Austin or one of its 5 surrounding counties.
• You must open a savings account with a $25.00 balance. The balance will need to be maintained, but you do get it back when the account is closed.
• We will need to see a Texas ID or state drivers license.
Upon these actions being met a checking account can also be opened. We require an initial deposit of $25.00 into it, but it is alright if the balance is later taken down to zero.
As long as these requirements are met then you are eligible to open an account with AustinTelcoFCU. We do not use chexsystems when opening an account to determine if the account can be opened, so it is alright if it does not report as "paid" or if it indicates fraud. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at (512) 302-5555 ext 7320.
