Since I'm in the hole right now with one of my banks...I do have another bank, but to tell you the truth right now, I'm thinking of closing that one too. I'm nervous that somehow some of these places will get the information. Do you think that the wisest thing to do right now, then maybe once the smoke clears I can get an account at one of those "free start" banks? One question, would we just get our paychecks cashed at the store or somewhere like walmart?

I don't know about Walmart and what their policy is on paychecks, but my son use to take it his paycheck to a check cashing place, and they charged a fee depending on how big the check was.

I had some problems with my bank account in the past and I cashed my check at Walmart a number of times.

Rules: (basically)

1. Max $1,000 payroll or gov't check per week.

2. Max 1 check cashed per week. (No two checks totally less than $1,000. Learned that the hard way.) If you forget to cash your check until Saturday morning then you can't cash next weeks check until Saturday morning. Very important to cash ASAP if you gotta use it for a number of weeks in a row.

3. Show a drivers license and enter your S.S.# into keypad.

4. They pay you whats on your check minus $3.00.

I was denied one time during Christmas when my check was $900 or so because of store activity. I came back the next day and they cashed it.

I would still use it if I needed more than my ATM would give me and my bank closed... and of course, I hadn't already deposited my check at my bank.

I think you can get a prepaid debit card that will take direct deposit for reloads. Then you can use it as a debit card or get cash at an ATM--for a fee, I'm sure. I think many of them also allow you to do bill pays from them. I think there are also annual fees on the cards. I'm not sure of all the details because I've never used one, but I've seen advertisements for them and discussion threads about them.

Make sure that you read the small print on them...I haven't used one either but while waiting in line at Walmart I read on the back the fees for them...

I know that Western Union offers a prepaid visa, I think it's like $4.95 a month or so...check it out.

I guess this depends on the employer -- but I used to work for a restaurant several years ago -- if there was enough money in the register, they would let us endorse our checks back to the company and cash them at the front counter.

Other than that, there are some debit cards out there that will let you direct deposit your paycheck onto the card, and then you can use it at ATM machines or to make purchases. I think they charge something like $5/month.

Be careful!!! Wal-Mart's lower prices are seen on their ads, BUT watch for their hidden costs. Fees on use of their debit card, annual fee... like a bank account - if you can nbot manage that, you'll find the same problems with managing a walmart debit card. Go to your local AMERICAN check cashing facility, pay the simple fee, and live your life without any other fees.

Be careful of wal-mart - they're not here to help us overall.

Madeleine, I don't think Wal-mart cashes personal checks, only payroll, but they may have changed. You can always try.

I wouldn't cash any checks at one of those "Check Cashing Stores", especially if you recently acquired a payday loan and are behind. They share information.
