I use to receive telephone calls from a friend who used Skype, when he was in the U.S. odd numbers would come up, such as: 458903600, in various combinations depending on his location. When he was overseas calling from Skype it always came up on my caller ID as 000-000-0000. Just a thought.

Laughing THANKS!!!
I'M REALLY ANGRY WITH SOME BAD COLLECTORS THAT ARE
USING A NUMBER THAT CANNOT BE TRACED.
I THINK GOVERNMENT HAVE TO STOP THIS PEOPLE FROM
HARASSING INNOCENT CONSUMERS WITH THE PHONE 000-000-0000
IF YOU CANNOT TRACED A NUMBER IS BECAUSE THIS CALLS ARE ILLEGAL CALLS.

These collectors can "spoof" their real nember and insert any number they choose.
Clark Howard, a consumer reporter in Atlanta says to never call these numbers back because their equipment will get your current phone number even if you have your number unlisted or blocked.

Yes that's true, they can spoof their numbers but, a lot of businesses are using Skype and other VOIP messengers to make long distance phone calls these days because it is more cost effective. It's just a thought.

Any 800 number you call your number is given to whomever owns the line. I won't even get into trap lines, trap calling cards ETC. now. I'll post a new post with some of their investigative techniques. I did a good amount of people locating in a previous line of work (not related to collections)

I received a call from 000-000-0000 on May 7, May 8, and May 9. I let the answering machine take all 3 calls. Nothing was left on the first 2, but the third one left a message saying it was GEICO and they were calling for my mom or dad.

I got a call too. When I answered I got a recorded message that said "This is your captain, two first-class seats are reserved for you" I hung up.

We have a Nortel phone system at my work. If we used ISDN, there is an option in the system settings to set our outgoing line identification (OLI#). The setting itself defaults to 000-000-0000.

It may just be that some of these companies have never gone into the settings on their phone system and changed the default to what it should be.

I can see a benefit to companies that legitmately use the feature. For example, we have about 16 different phone lines coming into our office. When I dial out, my extension just picks the first available line from a line pool -- it won't be my direct line that I'm dialing out on, so if someone calls back the number I'm using, they'll go into the automated attendant. But if I set my direct number using OLI, then if they call back the number on their caller ID, they'll go right to my extension instead of the automated attendant.

Another thing that CA's do --

They can have thousands of 800 numbers. They might assign an 800 # specifically to your account, and then leave that # on any voicemails they leave for you. Then if you dial that 800#, they know it was you, because you're the only person they gave the number to. Even if you hang up and don't actually talk to them, they've still got your caller ID info. And if you call from work, then they know your work phone #.
