Your only hope is that the loan company understands your situation and offers you suitable extensions. If possible, try sending a little amount of money so that your account remains current and hence, it doesn't reach collections.

There might be a separate dept in the loan company that assists people with financial hardship. Get in touch with them and figure out what they can do to help you out. The thing that matters is that you should inform the company about your situation. You are going through serious problems and it can happen with anyone. I am keeping fingers crossed and hoping that someone from the company will fix up something for you.

You are right--they can't get blood from a stone. If you are not meeting your basic needs, they have to be patient and work with you. But definately tell the company about it and they might be able to defer it for awhile or until you get back on your feet. Let us know what's going on, we care.

This has nothing to do with your debt. But you said you have no heat for the winter. Does your Dept. of Human Services have a program that offers to pay a portion of your heat bill to have it turned back on? You shouldn't be without heat in the cold. Check with your counties dept. of human services I'm almost positive that every state has a utility program to help those with low income maintain their utilites with credits.

And if you have no job or other assets I'm not sure how the debt would be paid if there's a judgment, maybe when you do get a job and the creditor finds out (through tax returns) they may start to garnish your wages. If you are receiving government assistance, or disability, those can not be garnished.

I would also try the Salvation Army, because I know they do provide help with Gas and Electric bills and if the only income you've got is $200 a month, then you certainly qualify.
Also, I would go down to the Welfare Office and look into getting some sort of assistance. Even if you have no dependents, you should qualify for General Assistance. It's not much, but it's better than what you've got now.
And also look into something you can get fast. Do you drive? If you do, check into something like being a cabbie. It's a good way to make fast cash.
Good luck and check back often, OK?

Dept. of Human Services doesn't give GA anymore with no dependants, at least not in OH and it is also difficult to get medicaid if you don't have a job and aren't receiving some type of disability payments, you may get it for 90 days and if you aren't approved for disability, and you don't get a p/t job then you don't get medicaid or foodstamps. I know each state receives federal money for utility credits to help pay the utilities but it is difficult anymore to receive assistance they are also cutting back across the board with foodstamp assistance due to the increase in utility allowances. Its the wonderful system at work making it more difficult for the poor and needy to survive.

Many churches also help those in need. Lutheran Social Services and Catholic Social Services, and there are others. You just have to check in your area and call, it doesn't hurt, you won't know who can help unless you make some calls. But the Salvation Army is a great resource like kscornell mentioned.

Wow...
News flash to all of the politicians out there...
You apply for medicaid/medi-cal cuz you're (drum roll please) BROKE!!!!!!!!!!!
We have to have some sort of a safety net in our society, what is wrong with us?
This is further erosion of the middle class in America. It's JUST WRONG!!!!!!!!

And to fight back, we need to ban PDL's!!! Look at poor Tammy, they're just making her bad situation even worse!!!!!

Because of a law passed 3 years ago by the federal govt. which increased the utility allowance, it is just taking effect this year and every receipient of food stamps across the board is going to see a decrease in their food stamp benefits, there is also now a co-pay for most people with medicaid, it isn't much but when you are already struggling and required to take medications it hurts.

I was in the same situation, no job and wasn't able to file unemployment for 3 months. Bills started racking up and I was a complete mess. Like someone stated, if you are a member of a church they are good about helping people.

Tammy: Did you previously work? I know in KY if you work at least 10 weeks, you can file for unemployement.

Man!
They better base any copays on a sliding scale, you know what I mean? If you've only got $200 a month, there's no way you can afford a big one!
And unemployment...I know that if you quit your job, you're not entitled to it, but if you are asked to leave, you can file. The employer can always fight that obviously.
