They left a message for me stating I had until end of business today to call them or severe actions will be taken which will be very damaging and very costly.

Did you get anything in writing? Collectors must follow the federal laws when doing collections. You should have complete information about the debt in writing before sending the money. Send a debt validation in case they don't give it within 5 business days. You have the legal rights under the federal and state laws. Someone else received a call from the same number. Go here
