We need to get a class action lawsuit going on this company. They will falsely threaten lawsuit, and harass individuals. This is obviously a violation of the Fair Debt Collection Act and all that. They also have been known, and have personally tried to call me, with the caller ID displaying "0". Misleading practices, harassment and bullying... is there an atty out there who is willing to take up the case???

Great Lakes Asset Management is most agressive debt collector in the United States. They hide behind different company and so on. Great Lakes Asset Management is a Delaware Corporation, check with the New York Secretary of State Corporations Website. When you check out the Delaware Secretary of State Corporations Website, you will see that there registered agent is the Business Filings Inc., whose registered agent is The Corporation Trust Company.

After further research, I found that the company is not registered with several Secretary of States and Attorney General, which is required to conduct business in several states.

What a great company for people to list there accounts with, people that have not a clue?

Relax. You ain't going to jail for owing money to scumbags. They're way outta line here. Violations of the fdcpa for certain, and probably other statutes as well.

These people have called me repeatedly, asking for someone whom I don't even know! I have asked them to cease calling, but here they are again calling and telling the person they are trying to dunn to call immediately or have counsel contact them. Very mean sounding guy. No caller id info, and calls from 7am to 10 pm at night! How can I stop this??!!

hi dreamer--

for one thing, the fdcpa(federal law) does not allow any CA to call people outside of the hours of 8am-9pm, unless that specific person has authorized a call at other times. If they are calling you at the times you indicated it would be a FDCPA violation.

You may consider sending them a cease and desist letter, sent certified mail return receipt. This is basically a letter that informs the CA that they are no longer allowed to contact you by any means, be it telephone, mail or computer. Be sure to send this certified RRR, so you will have a record of when they receive it. If, after they get it, the calls continue, then you have them on another FDCPA violation. At that point, I would gather the evidence of the phone calls at improper times, and the cease and desist stuff, and look up a lawyer on naca.com in your area. That will be your best option at that point because nothing else will stop them from calling if the C&D doesnt work.

If you sue them, know this--each FDCPA violation will cost them $1000 plus any actual damages that you have incurred, court costs, legal fees, etc etc. That's money paid to you, paid by the CA.

They are really notorious people collecting debts that are hundred and one years old. They will call you five times a day and are RUDE and will blatantly lie about who they are ( guess they are ashamed to reveal their true identity Laughing ) They will ask who you all sort of questions including your SSN! But when you ask questions to them they lie and some even misrepresent themselves by saying that they are attorneys. Wait thats not the end.....apart from lying and threatening you with dire consequences if you do not pay the debt they also use slurs.

These idiots will try every trick of the book to make you feel like as if you are a filthy creature of the planet earth because you can not pay a bill irrespective of the fact that you do not owe the bill. Hopeless people!!!!!

No matter what, you should call them back. Ignoring them doesn't necessarily mean they will just stop calling you. You should at least call and find out why they are calling. They will probably end up sending you something in the mail soon. If you do call though, just be prepared and remember not to allow yourself to be mistreated and not to give out your personal information.

My practice was to call back, find out what's what, tell them to send you a collection letter with all required information and then proceed according to what your situation is. If it is something you owe, try to work with them.

CAs are a mix...some good, some bad. Your only defense is to be knowledgable of your rights and to make an honest effort to resolve the situation with them. If they do not honor your efforts by violating laws then they are the ones who will lose out.
