Do you think it is better to try to call the origional creditor or try to make arrangements with a collection agency (in general) and why?
I have read so many posts with great advice and was just wondering if it wouldn't be better to negotiate a lower settlement with a collection agency. If you deal with the origional creditor, will they negotiate or do you have to pay the whole amount?
Just wondering?

It's always better to try to deal with the original creditor, if they haven't sold your accont. I had a cc company work with me, they dropped interest, fees, etc., for my promise to pay xx dollars a month for a year, so I could get it paid off. Haven't had ANY luck with collection agencies wanting to do payments..KAren

I'll definitely second that. It is rarely, if ever, to your advantage to work with a collection agency. Working with the original creditor is always better and you should do that whenever possible.
collection agencies will sometimes try to claim that you are required to work with them for some reason. If they do, ask them to prove their claim. Occasionally, they're telling the truth. Usually, they're not.
