This month I have recieved 2 calls from a ken hughes (affiliated with a collection agency) stating that i owe several hundreds of dollars due from a supposed Visa card from 1998 - they are reporting they "bought" the contract through lvnv and are collecting a debt - I do not have nor have had a credit card through them - they are stating that i made a payment back in 1999 leaving hundreds of dollars left owed - where do i even begin to research something like this? I would imagine I would have recieved something in the mail pertaining to such a debt and or Visa company.....

Find out when you last paid on this account in case you ever had this account. It looks like this debt is already past the reporting period unless you have shown some payment activity on it.
If you are sure of them mentioning an account you never had, write a DV letter for proof of this debt. Use the federal laws and get the required information from the collection company. If they can't prove you owe, you don't have to take responsibility of paying a disputed account.

Did you actually talk to this man? Or was it just left on a answering machine? By law after the initial contact with you they are required to send you something in writing within 5 days about this debt.
Also once you getr the address where to send a debt validation letter to I would send one out certifiedmail/return receipt. as proof that they got the letter. If you dont know what a validation letter is you can find a sample one on the diy section here.
Also if you find out that this debt is indeed legite it very well may be past the sol. If so no worrries about a lawsuit or anything.
If you want to post the state your in I or someone else who may come along first could posssibly let you know the sol for your state.

Yes, post the state so we can help you with the SOL. If it is definitely outside of the SOL, then you have the right to send a cease and desist all forms of communication letter (only send this letter if you are 100% sure SOL has expired, if it has not, it may trigger a lawsuit). Make sure whatever correspondence you send, that you use CMRRR.
