Allied calling for my daughter

just got a call on the cell phone my daughter and I share from allied interstate. She is studying abroad out of the country until June. I told Allied that and that I had power of attorney to handle her affairs. They would only give me their name, nothing about who they were or what kind of company they were. They told me they would not discuss anything with me to protect from identity theft unless I faxed them a copy of the power of attorney. All that sounded legit so far. Then they said it was up to me whether or not I wanted to "help her out". I was traveling when they called so could not respond immeditately. When I returned home I found your site. Here is my question....Prudently, what do I need to do next? I checked my daughters credit reports and there is nothing to indicate an unpaid debt or potentially negative situations. All her accounts (mostly student loans) are in good standing. Do I need to contact Allied with the PofA to see what they are talking about? What do I risk by doing nothing? Can they hurt my daughter's credit rating if they cannot contact her?

Thanks for your advice.

I would send them a letter requesting what their reason
for calling about daughter. They are correct about not discussing anything on the phone with you.If they had talked to you without that poa they would have violated federal law.

I would ask them for a fax number and send copy of poa with letter to them. Them drop one in the mail certified return receipt just to cover all the bases.

See this sample debt validation letter

Allied Interstate must send something in writing about the debt and prove that they are authorized for collections on your daughter's past account. They are required to send the information within five business days from the first phone call. If you have received nothing in your mail, send a DV letter, CMRRR. This will be your legal move to prove the responsibility and the matter being addressed in the legal way.

I have a case against allied interstate, aka IntelliRisk Management, for harassing someone who does not owe them money. Just a heads up. They, like many other collectors, make major mistakes and illegally harass people who do not owe them money. If you must talk to them, don't let them intimidate you.

Yes, if there is a legitimate debt that she has, and they are authorized to collect. They are legally permitted to report negative information if accurate. Generally speaking, a negative credit report entry will not hinge on contact with a debtor.

Alled is a collector for the US Department of Education. I would advise checking on this in case it is a student loan problem.
