Can someone help me?
In January, I received a letter from a collection agency stating that I owed $470 to their client, LVNV Funding. It also stated that the original creditor was Amoco Oil. When I contacted the collection agency, they confirmed my social security number & current address on the account. However, they also told me that this was a gas credit card opened in 1991 and the last activity was in 1992. I pointed out that I was not old enough to have a credit card in 1991 and that I was in no way associated with this account. They further explained that their records show that LVNV Funding attempted to collect the debt various times at my current address (which is not true - I never heard a thing about this until the letter came this January from the collection agent).
I pointed out that my September 2005 credit report showed nothing related to this matter.
The collection agent told me to fax written dispute to them & that they will close out the account & send the documentation to LVNV Funding but that they COULD NOT give me any contact information for LVNV Funding so that I could attempt to resolve the matter my self or find out why my social security number has been associated with this account.
Does anyone have any insight as to what's really going on here? What further steps should I be taking?
