Amex just called me last night and offered a new plan, so that I could carry my balance and just make payments. (I turned it down) So they do offer other products. You may be able to roll the balance over to one of these other plans. I know someone else that had to do that because his wife went on a spending spree.
Just give them a call and see what they have to offer
I would also advice taking the “authorized user” off your card

I was not past due. I always pay on time. It was a marketing call I’m sure amex is looking to be able to charge interest on the balance. After all that is how most credit cards make their money.
I would give them a call or at least check out the website. They offer several types of accounts. I’m sure you can change the type of account your in now.

i just called them and spoke to a woman in customer service...she said after 90 days from the statement date it goes into internal collections and the account is canceled. she basically told me to come up with a plan and call them back. she was nice, probably because the account is current and she's a customer service agent, not a debt collector... so basically it looks like it will be at least 3 months before it enters collections and probably a few more before it goes to an outside agency.

I would defiantly make a plan with them. You don’t want it to go to collections. It’s hard to clear that stuff up. Plus I’m sure they can charge all kinds of fee’s and interest.
Did you ask about changing this to a pay monthly plan?

hey,
i did ask amex about a payment plan but they said that the account is current and it's too early to discuss that. they said i need to pay as much as i can now and call back once it goes past due...basically they aren't going to send it to outside collections until august or so. by then hopefully i can have paid off maybe 50% of the balance and can convince them to keep it in house and set up a payment plan to have the rest paid off in a few months.
