received a "validation letter"from Asset Acceptance

ok.. I never disputed with them- because I just mailed the letter friday afternoon, but I received a validation letter from Asset Acceptance.

Except... all it states is the Original Creditor, the acct number, the balance and my name with the address they have on file for me (which is inaccurate). Is this some sort of joke? How in any way are they validating my bill if it states NOTHING. What steps should I take now? This is clearly inadequate. I sent my real validation request on friday, so i'm assuming they'll send the same thing again only i'll have sent it certified, return receipt so i'll have proof. If thirty days go by with no word, or better- the same silly letter, what do i do?

Thanks so much!

I would wait and see if you receive validation from your letter you sent Friday. I have never dealt with the company, so I don't know how they operate. I have always said there are some good, some not so good. Wait and see what happens. If they do not reply, then you can choose to ignore it or contact them to determine what the situation is.

Don't expect much from Asset Acceptance, that is the best you will get from them. I have been "dealing" with them for over three years and they do not validate with anything that is legal.

Info please:
What state do you live in?
Who is the original creditor?
When did you make last payment on the debt?

Who is the original creditor? Victorias Secret
When did you make last payment on the debt? 2/2005

If they can't properly validate the debt than I want it removed from my credit report. What am I supposed to do in order to have that done?

First you send the debt validation letter (if you have not already done so) then dispute their entry with the credit reporting agencies. If they fail to provide you with proper validation but are able to verify it with the credit reporting agencies you will need to contact the bureaus which they verified it with and request their Asset Acceptance's method of validation. If they did not provide proper verification to the credit reporting bureaus then you have grounds to file civil suit against Asset Acceptance and possibly even the bureau.

so what may be insufficient validation to me may be enough for the credit bureau? if they send that exact same letter to the credit bureau- which only has my name, the acct number, the balance, and my address... that could be enough?

Sometimes they don't even bother to verify it, I got Transunion on that for verifying an account in half an hour at 5AM on a Sunday. Gotta love that auto verification.

oh really? ok, well that keeps me hopeful. That verification pissed me off, you know? Who are they trying to fool? I love this website. I didn't know squat about my rights. I was one of those people that would foolishly just pay out of fear and now i know better!

This site is a wellspring of knowledge. Whatever question about your rights you may have, someone on this site will have a answer for you.

Just remember that the credit bureaus are privately owned companies, they are also subject to the FCRA the same as the companies who report to them.

update...

ok, so i got that debt validation letter from them with bs on it. On my credit report it was claiming it was in dispute as well- even though i never disputed it until i sent them the request letter last friday.
Today, however, i got an alert that said that it changed from in dispute on my credit report back to collection account. However, if they received my letter prior to making this change- does that mean they abused my rights? Aren't they obligated to not make any changes that may hurt my credit report? I hope i get my certified mail receipt today saying that they got it yesterday! The only thing i'm worried about is that it said it was in dispute on my CR, and then changed- meaning they proved it to the CBA? Will it still be a violation of my rights if they've received my official debt validation request?

Until they provide validation all collection activity must cease, this includes reporting to any consumer reporting agency.

well technically they provided validation with their ridiculous letter that i never requested. I did however mail a legitimate debt validation letter on Friday, but today they changed back to collection. So will they get in trouble for doing something detrimental to my report if they've already received my debt validation or no because they already sent one that i never requested?

Basically it counts once you get proof back they got the letter. Them messing with your credit report has to stop once they get the validation request, hoever they may not since they likely feel what they sent was good enough. It's not. You may have to play hardball with them.
