My mother is being contacted for a significant student loan debt. They're asking to speak to me and using profane language. She says that I don't live there and gives no further information.
What can be done to get the calls to stop? My mother isn't very good with these things. She's elderly and not a native English-speaker.
I don't want to do anything directly because I don't want to acknowledge the debt. I left the US eight years ago and have no intention of returning. I haven't made a payment or contacted any creditor in seven years. Since I don't live in the US, my thinking is that there's very little they can do to collect. Also, is it right that if I don't acknowledge the debt over a certain number of years, they can't pursue it any longer?

Your mother should tell them to not call her again. Since, you don't live in US, so they can hardly do any harm to you. If you don't intend to return to US, then you won't get affected because of this debt.

MOD NOTE....IF YOU DO NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT STUDENT LOANS, DO NOT ANSWER!!!

Are these federal or private loans???

Actually your thinking is quite wrong. Google international collections....it is becoming more and more common. Federal loans do not have an SOL. Private loans do have an SOL but since you are out of the country the sol is tolled...which means it has been frozen. If you have significant debt, they are more likely to pursue you. \

As for your mother, she will need to send a cease and desist letter to the collection agency. However, the loan will more than likely be passed to another agency and the cycle will start all over again.
