This is a long story...prepare yourself!
1) In Dec 2007 I received a statement from a debt collection agency stating that I owed taxes to the City of Stamford for tax years 1994 and 1995.
2) A little history... relocated from PA to CT in the summer of 94 to get married. At that time, I used my aunt's address (Stamford, CT) to change my name. This also updated the title of my car, drivers license, etc.
3) In Oct. 94, my husband and I moved to Darien, CT and rented a house for about 6 months before relocating back to PA.
4) Here's the scoop...after speaking to the debt collector, I sent a letter disputing the bills and the ridiculous interest charges. (Principle $120, Interest $260) In my letter, I sent a copy of my 1994 tax return showing that we were part year residents and also provided a tax document that had a change of address label on it with my Darien address.
5) I never received a bill from Stamford and was never aware of any outstanding taxes owed. My credit is excellent and there is no indication on my credit report that I have been delinquent to pay a debt to Stamford.
6) I tried calling the Tax Acessor in Stamford and had to resort to email to get in touch with her. She told me that if I provided her with a copy of a utility bill from my Darien address, she'd agree to review my account.
7) Tried to even remember who I used for utilities in 94 and 95 and called them. No one has any statements on file beyond a 10 year time frame. My only defense is my '94 tax return, a copy of an AutoFax report that shows I registered the car in 10/94 in CT and 11/95 in PA.

Can someone help me here? The debt collector is telling me that there is a 15 year SOL in the state of CT???? On top of that, the account is still accruing interest. I would be willing to pay the principle amt for '94, but I didn't even legitimately live there for more than 2-3 months. In '95, I moved back to PA!

HELP!!! This collector is calling me every day. They use an automated voice message. It's making me crazy!

Taxes normally have a lon or no sol period. I would send a dv letter to the collector certified return receipt mail. Use the third link in my signature for a template. I would also write the tax assessor's office & demand a copy of all documents related to this debt so you have the documents needed to start the process of dealing with this mess.

Can't I just pay the principle and be done with this?

Most tax authoritys are allowed interest & penalties which is why I would document account to see what is up.
