“I pay $1800 in rent, so I can only afford to pay you
$20 per month for the next 20 months.”

“I ran out of checks, so I can’t pay you.”

“Those can’t be my checks. I have never written
a bad check in my life.”

“I was on my way to pay when my car broke, so I used
the money to fix it. I can send $20.”

“I have to pay for my kid’s braces.”

“I was abused when I was a child. I’m still in therapy,
so I can’t afford to pay you back.”

“I can’t pay you until after I pay for my ski
trip next month.”

“…yes, this is John, who is this?” (after finding out who it was)“…oh, I mean, this is John’s brother Jerry. Didn’t you hear? John died.”

“My husband is an alcoholic and spends all of
our money on booze.”

“I have Attention Deficit Disorder, and I forgot
I owed you $1700 and spent all the money yesterday.”

“The horse I picked in the 5th broke his leg
in the backstretch.”

“I am in the final stages of terminal cancer.
Call back in 6 months.”

“My paychecks are being garnished for back
child support. Go talk to my ex-wife.”

“I’m a single parent. I have six children and work at KFC. I can get you some gift certificates for some chicken buckets, that’s about it.”

“I don’t get paid until the first or the 3rd.”

(SSI & SSA Paydates)

“I was fittin ta send that, but ah broke my ankle on the way ta pay and ah shore nuff had ta go ta
the doctah and spent all mah money.”

“You can’t call this a bad check; you have to prove
intent, and I didn’t intend for it to go bad.”

(Regarding a Post-Dated Check Loan)

“I know the law, and Section 132 of the Post-Mortemized Biopsy Statute says clearly that your telephone contract with said client’s place of employment is outside the boundments of processional collection behavior, and therefore is in violation of the Fair Debit and Certified Public Countenance Act of the First Amendment of the Constitution.”
(We think that she was thinking of the fdcpa—Fair Debt Collection Practices Act)

“I have AIDS, it can’t get any worse for me.
Do what ya gotta do.”

“I was not authorized to set up that website. I can’t be held responsible because I weigh over 500 pounds, am on disability, and have no other income. Enclosed is a picture of me, maybe that will convince you that I am telling the truth.”

“No, I only have ever had the checking account I have right now. I know full well that it is against the law to have more than one checking account in your lifetime. I never wrote that check.”

“I found out that my wife was leaving me for another woman. I fell into a deep depression, I drank and used drugs, I lost my house, my car, and my job, so I can’t pay.” (We believe that this debtor may currently be writing country music lyrics)

“I was on my way to pay when my boss and I got
jumped and mugged by three gay men for not being gay.” (We have a copy of the police report to verify this)

You have way to much time on your hands. Some of them are kind of funny though!
How about "I gambled with the money that I didn't have so I have to pay Vinnie the Stooge on the corner of Bloomfield ave. by Dickey Dees first or I'll have my face broken."

Sad thing is, some of them are true- car broke down-etc. For a long time I paid some crazy collection agency that I didn't even know I owed(before I came to this site), and did without my meds, heart, etc., to pay them. Some of us who have lost our jobs and health insurance have to decide whether to eat and have a roof over our heads or pay them--today the choice is easy-eat, get meds, and have a place to stay..!!..KAren

Bet we could come up with a few that explains why people choose this line of work, I will start.Let me say before hand that not all collectors are jerks but it seems this one in particular wants to mock people who for some reason can't pay their bills. Some of these excuses are legit and I don't like it when you play on people misfortune, I believe we are all one paycheck away from the same misfortune.

1. I have a law degree but I can't pass the bar so I work in collections.

2. Working in collections is easy, all I have to do is call up and bully people, I don't even have to know the laws.

3. I can't get employment anywhere else, I telemarketed before while in law school so this is alot like that job.

anybody care to add to the list?

Oooh! Ooohh! Me! Me! LOL

4. I am a convicted felon and can't find gainful employment anywhere else, so I work in collections for not much more than minimum wage, and take my pent up frustration and anger out on the debtors whose homes I call 20 times a day.

With that said, I'll go back to my STEAK DINNER now...complete with fresh summer squash and zucchini on the side.

And before our friend comes back and berates me for my steak dinner, guess where I found that steak? In the markdown section for 1/2 price! Laughing

5. I work in collections because I needed a job with no thinking required.

6. I work in collections b/c i can make up laws as I go.

7. I work collections to ensure I go to a warm place after I die. I hear hot , dry air is good for the skin.

8. I lost my job with the payday lender.
9. I enjoy being hung up on and sent cease & desist letters, it is the only human contact I get.

Maybe I'm playing devil's advocate here, but I know that the collection agency employees hear every excuse under the sun. And I know it has to be frustrating for them to try and do their job and have SOME debtors refuse to pay based on what appears to be a flimsy excuse.

But being a debtor myself, I have to say I have faced many of the situations they hear about - broken down car, kids sick/trips to the doctor/hospitalized, loss of job, loss of other source of income, divorce, you name it. It's not ALWAYS a lie or a sob story told to a collector just to get out of paying the debt - many times, it's TRUTH. They just get paid not to believe it. One can only hope they never face that situation themselves. Oh wait...they're collectors...we're supposed to believe they never pay a bill late, have medical/financial/car troubles or get screwed in a divorce. Their lives are golden.

I agree SUEBEE. But to me, it would be far more interesting to see a list of collectors' excuses when they are hauled into court for various violations of the law.
