If I send a debt collector a request for verification of a debt they are chasing me for, do they have to respond within a given time under Texas law? Thanks.

I don't think debt collectors have any restricted time frame within which they have to validate or verify a debt. Are they reporting the item on your credit report? If you think their reporting is incorrect and they are not verifying it after sending the letter, dispute it with the credit bureau. They will investigate with the company and verify the details.

Also make sure u send a debt "valiation" letter not verification, it's 2 different things! I think it is much easier for a CA to verify an account than to validate it.
Make sure to send it return reciept.

I believe that in Texas they have 30 days to make some response, either that they are in error or that they have not yet had the time to honor your request.

What you are looking for is Texas Finance Code No. 392, or google the Texas Debt Collection Act. I've read it, and the beauty of it is, that it applies to original creditors as well as third parties. Violations are not only civil but also criminal misdemeanors, as well as automatic vilations of the Texas Trade Practices act.
