I'd suspect the above two replies are from Graystone themselves. They called me about an account I allegedly opened in 2007 that I honestly cannot recall ever having established. They even had an address that didn't match mine for at least 10 years as being shown on the account. I requested they send valid proof by mail of the account. To this their only response was that I needed to go file a police report for theft and accused my kids and wife of having opened the account in my name. Nothing shows up on mt credit report that I pulled however since this discussion took place they call every day yelling and screaming. Still nothing in the mail sofar from them either.

They are required by law to send you a dunning letter detailing the debt and including dispute procedure. File a complaint against them with the FTC, the FCC, the Bureau of Consumer Affairs, your State Attorney General, the BBB, etc. If they won't send you a letter (which is *required* by Federal law - the FDCPA) I would assume they are a scam and would treat them like one.

My husband got a call from them on August 20, 2009 this is the first time that I have ever heard of them. The lady left her name as Victoria Pearson from Grey Stone Allience and said she was calling in reference to some property that he owned. I did some research and found your post she left the same phone number that you posted. She also said that she sent him some information in the mail, but he haven't gotten anything. I knew something was wrong when she said it was about property that he owned because our property is paid up and everything is legal. He have not called her back, sometimes they will approach you ina way to try to get your physical address so they can send you mail. Thanks for your post.

I actually have a debt that I am paying off with them. They faxed over my information and everything was legit. They work out my payments for me so don't worry. It was a bill I forgot about also. If you have any doubt though just have them fax over proof of you account and they should be able to prove it.

People. THIS IS A SCAM. Use your common sense. I absolutely hate that people are being scammed by this, especially the elderly. NO, YOU DO NOT OWE THEM MONEY. I don't care if you have bought something you owe money on, THIS COMPANY IS NOT LEGIT. Don't answer the call. Don't listen to some of these others that have posted. If you owe money on something, you will be sent letters in the mail *several times*. Don't do ANYTHING over the phone, unless YOU call a specific company that you work with. If it seems illegitimate, IT IS. Warn others. If you don't recognize a phone number, don't answer it. Listen carefully if a message is left. All calls from this number and several others have never left me a message. If you feel the need to talk to these people, record it for the police. Go ahead and tell them you are doing so. But better yet, don't give them the time of day. PLEASE DO NOT BE FOOLED.

You realize that any of the actions are illegal. They can only call a friend or family member ONCE and this to get information about if you are working or living there. They cannot reveal the nature of the call. If they call about anything else, that is a violation. You people who come on here and complain really need to file a complaint with FTC and sue!

I have greystone calling me on a debt I have already paid off over two years ago. But since then I have had a divorce and we used the ex's bank to pay the debt. When she left me she kept all the paperwork we had on anything and everything. I have no way of getting the bank records now to prove this has been paid off. what should I do?

I have reported this number from greystone alliance to the do not call registry.
Maybe everyone can do the same. Make a copy of your complaint.

I just got a call from this company. The guy asked me if I would give a message to my neighbor. Gave me her name and her file number even after I indicated the call was probably about a debt as this would be the only way someone would contact neighbors. I intend to contac a law enforcement agency.

Just curious....
I had a collection agency call me that I have never heard of today. The gentleman identified himself as Christian Lafferty(I'm not sure of the spelling) said he was calling regarding a legal matter and it would be in my best interest to contact him ASAP. The number he left was 716-218-4832. The number that showed up on caller id was 716-218-4899. When I call back, some gentleman answered the phone just by speaking his name and that was it. When I get to Christian finally he tells me that he is collecting on a payday loan from 3 years ago to Global Payday. It was way into the conversation that I finally found out the company name....Greystone Alliance collection agency, physical address 255 Great Arrow Ave, Ste 15, Buffalo, NY. I do some research and find that this is the same location that Elite Recovery opperated out of.
Also, it was at the end of the call before he identified that he was a debt collector and any information received would be used to collect a debt.
I'm just curious.....
I haven't received anything in the mail yet. He said they just got the debt today. Is this a violation of the FDCPA to call before I receive anything in writing?
Also, I don't even remember if I paid this debt or not.
Has anyone else out there every heard of this company?
I'm sorry for the long post but it just threw me off. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Greystone alliance keeps calling me and i have never received anything in the mail? I tried to answer it once and they told me to call back. Im about to change my number they are annoying me soo badly!

They are doing illegal things by calling anyone to say anything about your debt. Get a lawyer, and sue them.

Greystone has called me several times looking for someone that isn't me, doesn't share my last name, never lived at my address and is not related to me. The rep was very nice, but is calling random numbers really going to turn up your missing debtor? I don't think so.

Grey Stone Alliance is formly Elite Recovery.

Overall.... They can call before sending a letter. They are probably calling to verify the address is correct. They have 3 days to mail out the letter of representation, also known as a dunning letter, to give you a 30 day window to dispute the bill owed. It does not matter at what point in the conversation the mini-miranda (informing you that he is a debt collector and any information obtained will be used for that purpose).

Collection agencies are really easy to deal with. If you can find the proof that you paid it, send it to them. Ask what day the last time the bill was paid. That will give you a general direction of where to look.

Also, if you find it on your credit report before they spoke with you, that IS NOT necessarily a violation. They usually give you anywhere from 30-60 days to either dispute that debt or to take care of it prior to it being reported.

ALSO, something that people don't understand is.... although you may have an account that was opened in 1999, it would be 10 years old. BUT the statute of limitations is in effect 7 years from the date of last activity, meaning the last day the account was paid on. So if the last time you paid the account was any time after 2002, it will appear on you credit report. HOWEVER, for people who are interested in cleaning up their credit and can not afford to pay the whole thing at once, but would like to at some point.... well here is a good tip for you. Take a SETTLEMENT. This will stop the interest from accruing on the account and it looks much better than not paying it at all. Then when you have the money to pay the rest of it, you won't have any interest that has accrued since your last payment.

Collection agencies are really not that bad. You'll come across some people that are very rude and will be condescending, but that is when you turn to that collector and say.... "I'm helping you hit your quota by talking to you... you may want to change your tone and be a bit less evasive. This way we can help each other."
