Hi, I have a debt from Union Privilege card-MC and apparently they sold my debt to ERC. I stopped making payments on the card in 2007. The maximum balance was $500 and now ERC says that I owe them $1405 and said they are insisting that I pay with a debit or credit card the full amount. What should I do?

first thing that you want to do is to request debt validation, this will make them explain all the fees and how the amount got as high as it did. You can find it on the do it yourself part of this page.

Yes, as erb said, send them a debt validation letter, see the link below for a sample. Also, make sure you send it to them certified return receipt, this is very important so that you will have proof they received it!
