I have a debt collector contacting me for money their name is creditors exchange. the bought the account from AT&T. I am enrolled in a debt settlement program and am trying to save the money up but do not have it right now. Well they want 4400 right now or they are going to take me to court and they said something about putting a lien on my property and also garnishing my wages. I sent them a cease and desist letter on Friday but do not know what to do. I do not have 4400 at this moment.
any feedback would be appreciated

Well, you should first send them a debt validation letter (you can find a good template in my signature) send it certified mail, return receipt requested. This will make them prove they own the debt or are properly entitled/licensed to collect on it. It will also give you a breakdown of charges so that you can determine if they inflated it exorbitantly.

HI ead! if you are on a debt settlement program then tell them that. its not that you are not trying to pay. you can also talk to your original creditors and request them to defer the payment. if you are enrolled in a settlement program and have proof of that then i don't think they will gain anything by taking you to court. and the next time they call you ask them if they could chalk out a repayment plan. after all they cant just charge you $4400 all of a sudden.
