Is it too late to send a debt validation letter?

I have been paying on a debt I co-signed for a friend who is now deceased. I know nothing of the history of this debt, if she ever paid anything, what was purchased, etc. I just got word of it after she died and the collection agency started trying to get me to pay. Since I knew I co-signed, I figured I had to pay it. It has been about 90 days. Is it too late to request validation?

Once you have started payment it will look kind of senseless to want to validate. You can send them a validation letter if you desire certified return receipt mail. Since you are already on a payment plan I would demand a cost breakdown of the debt as a minimum.

Cajun, Once a payment has been made, isn't it like agreeing that the debit is valid. Once this is done, what would be the purpose of a DV letter?

Payments do not negate your rights to a dv,but in the courts eyes it would show you agree to validity of debt. I would use it to show me how much is owed versus fees, interest, and principal.

Thank you for your responses. That is what I want to know - late fees, over limit fees, the actual purchases, etc. I'd like to know if she ever paid anything... I doubt it. I'd like to make an offer to settle this when I get my income tax return, possibly. I don't even know what the credit limit was on the card. Haven't seen even one statement from the original creditor. What a stupid MESS. Talk about learning life's lessons the hard way! Can't make enough stupid mistakes by myself.....
