Mojorus

A debt collector is harassing my neighbor, asking for my phone number. My neighbor did not give them any information and they started to scream at them. They ask my neighbors how long have they been living at that address, and why they know nothing about their neighbors. They have been calling my parents everyday, even on Sundays at 8:30am, is this legal? What can I do to stop this harassment.

Collectors are allowed to call third parties when they are unable to reach you. You may ask your neighbors and parents to send the cease and desist letter. This will stop the collectors from calling them in the future. Here is the sample letter

Is this the original creditor? Or was the debt sent to an outside collection agency? You can send them a cease and desist letter to stop phone communication with you if it isn't the original creditor, but if it is the original creditor, they can continue to call you at home. BUT, they can not call your neighbors, family, and work if you instruct them not to in writing. (Doesn't always mean they will honor the cease and desist though).

I have gotten a call, very harrassing and a little, about some bill that a friend of mine had. It is kind of hard to believe that they are able to harrass people like that and threaten them for something they had no idea about.
I hope the letter will get them to stop!

This is an example of what's called skip tracing. This is when they can't reach you, so they start calling your neighbors, usually pretending to be a friend so they can get your new address, etc.
Funny story here: my sister used to collect (I'm so ashamed, lol..) and did this in Philadelphia--and called for a man who had been arrested for chaining women in his basement!! The case had been all over the local news, I guess--and the guy she called busted out when she said "I'm a really good friend of __ has he moved??" Yeah, he'd moved alright, lol...

Let me take a wild guess . . . you defaulted on an internet payday loan, Mojorus? And the guy making these calls has a heavy Indian accent?

The good news about internet pdl's is that there isn't much they can legally do about it when you say enough is enough to their illegal interest. The bad news is they make up for that with abusive collections in the hope that you'll pay just to get them to stop.
