I think I paid an incorrect amount to company?

LVNV showed up several times on my credit report when I was buying my home last year (May 2007). They reported owning two different amounts twice (so they showed 4 times total). My loan officer made me pay both of the amounts as I was in a hurry to finalize the loan (stupid I know). Now that I have the time to deal with this (if it's not too late of course), I thought I'd get cracking on some of the discrepancies I encountered (if I can do anything after the fact, that is!)

On the CR under LVNV, they both referenced MCI but used different account numbers and dates. One amount was $1,561 and the other was $156, they are so similar which is why I believe an error was made somewhere. The $156 amount also showed under two other creditors names but I was able to prove they were doubles.

My question is how do I go about this? Do I call MCI first and find out what accounts I had with them? CAN I get my money back from LVNV if I did in fact overpay? Do I need an attorney? Should I call LVNV? PLEASE HELP!

To further muddle the problem I just found out by looking at the earlier credit reports that I had paid Midland Credit Management on the original account number, so I had actually paid the debt off 3/07. I didn't owe LVNV anything at all. What do I do?

I think I'd send LVNV a validation demand on the debt, and enclose proof of payment. Then wait to see what, if anything shakes loose, and follow the process along if needed.

Is "validation demand" the same as "debt validation"?

and do I need to send these letters return receipt/certified? It costs $5.21 per letter and there are 9 of them between the double and tripple reporting companies. I paid all them in full, no settlements, and without knowing if I will get any money back that is $46.89 and quite a gamble for a "chance" at getting anything back. Any suggestions please?
Thank you!

Is that 9 seperate companies or 9 accounts spread out over a number of companies? If you have a couple accounts with a few companies you can list multiple accounts in the same letter to the creditor, I have done it a few times.

Yup, just a little less politely worded.

I'm partial to this one:

Are all of them showing up on your credit report? If they are, start disputing them as multiples and see what happens. I bet at least a few of those would drop off. I know how it is to have to send out a bunch of letters, it does add up. Once you have a fresh copy of your report any remaining you can start to work on them, do a few each month, this is what I do..it takes longer, but what else can ya do? Smile

Well I figured I'd update you all on my MCI debt fiasco and to ask for some more assistance.

To refresh your memories, I had an original debt of $123 due to MCI from a few years ago. I paid that amount to Midland Funding LLC 2/19/07 for the debt. 5/25/07 I took out a loan and through the closing process I paid off all of the debts that showed on my report. One of them was to Northland for $156 and one was to LVNV for $1561. It turns out that they were actually for the same debt due to MCI that I had already paid to Midland 3 months prior.

The Northland debt was $156 which included the original $123 plus fees. The LVNV account had an extra digit tacked on at the end which added an extra $1,001 to what I actually owed.

Upon advice from some great folks here, I sent out certified Debt Verification/ Validation letters to MCI (the original debtor that I never paid anything to directly), Midland Credit Management, Northland Group, Inc and LVNV Funding regarding this mess. As of today, 30 days later, I have not received any replies.

Any suggestions about what to do now?

Thank you!
