I see that u said that if bill collectors call ignore there call. But you should'nt do that because if you ignore there call they can call back... You should always answer and tell them not to call anymore. It is against the law for them to call if you say stop calling if you dont say anything you will keep recieving calls untill the company gets the letter... That is really annoying... Its not illegal to keep calling as long as they havn't talked to any one... Depending on what state your in...

Not everyone follows the rules. I have had many collectors call over and over again even after I told the I can not receive calls at work. Some just don't care. Rolling Eyes

A few times, I had a certain bill collector call me...in fact this comapny called SEVERAL times. I called back each time. Every time I called back, and gave them the information, they needed, they found out they had the wrong person. Isit legal, for collectors, to keep calling, AFTER they have told YOU they have the wrong number??

I'm sure it is not legal for them to keep calling you at work, as many employers do not allow personal calls. Once you tell them this they should stop. I’m not sure about calls to your home. Anyway I do return calls and I do ask that they send me everything in the mail. I want everything on paper.

The others are right....they don't always stop calling just because you tell them to.

My husband started getting harassed by Asset Acceptance. Somehow, these bozos got hold of my personal cell phone number, and started harassing me! They would always call on weekdays during normal business hours. I couldn't just turn off my cell phone, as I had to keep it on in case the kids had an emergency...but the boss was getting annoyed by the repeated calls. They would call like every hour until I answered the phone. I would tell them every time, "You will not reach ______ at this number, this is my PERSONAL cell phone, and you are bothering me at work!" Each time, the person on the other end would get ugly with me and tell me that if I wanted them to stop calling me, then I need to get my husband to pay the debt! I would end up hanging up on them, and they would call again in a day or two with the same junk.

One day, I finally had it! After hanging up, I looked them up on the web, and found an email address (which according to another thread, may no longer be working). I sent them a very curt email telling them to take ___________ off their list of contact numbers for ____________....that this was not his number, and though I am his wife, he cannot be reached at this number. I went on to tell them that if they ever called me again regarding the issue, that I would contact my local attorney general AND sue them for personal damages, which I am sure would be for way more than they claim my husband owes them! I have not received another phone call since, though my husband gets about 3-4 calls a day from them.

We are currently waiting for validation from them, as my husband is sure the paid the thing off years ago, and if it turns out he didn't, the debt should be way out of SOL by now!

zeeney -

Just to clarify, no one here will tell anyone to ignore collector's calls. To do so is dangerous.

You stated:

Quote:
DEPENDING ON WHAT STATE YOUR IN.

Again, a clarification - a collector does not have to stop calling you completely if you tell them to. They will simply call you somewhere else - like your home.

I think what you meant to say was that if you tell them not to call you at work, they have to stop - that IS true. But you have to give them a way to contact you. You may request that they only contact you in writing. But you can't just tell them "don't call me" and leave it at that - it won't stop them.

I think you also meant to include something about a letter in your post - the letter you are speaking of is a letter instructing the collector to Cease and Desist collection on the account - a sample is available here on our site. Basically, this letter states that you prefer to work directly with the original creditor on your account, rather than a collection agency, and that the collection agency needs to cease and desist all efforts to collect on the account, including phone calls.

Very well put Sue...I don't think that zeeney intended to say anything negative.. Sometimes it seems like they are that way but in reality that's the furthest thing they intended to do.

I think you straightend up any confusion on this issue. Thanks a million Laughing
