I need information on a company called United Legal Investigation Bureau. A guy called my job threatening to send the police to my home, repeated my social security number and home address as well and said that he didnt know what was going to happen to me but that it was urgent that i called them bank. I'm not sure where they are located but the area code he provided was 210.

..and they are not supposed to be leaving personal information on a message. I googled them and cannot find anything. Sounds like some pay day lender junk collection agency.

Yes, I found out it was a pay day loan that I forgot to pay back and he said that our call was being recorded by the attorney generals office and that a warrent for my arrest would be issued in 2 hours unless i paid this loan back today and then said if i could send at least 200 today they would work with me and not issue a warrent for my arrest. I am scared to death and dont have 200 today as i dont get paid until next friday. I didnt do this on purpose and want to pay it back but i dont have it today, he is giving me until 4pm, what should i do?

From Newspaper online archives:

Quote:
LEWISTOWN - Moving beyond traditional mail and e-mail scams, local residents are reporting a new scam attempt in Mifflin County. Recently an area man called police during the last week of November, saying he received a phone call, supposedly from "Officer Nick," from the United Legal Investigations Bureau in Texas. The "officer" told the man that he needed to send $500 to the company in Texas, or he would be arrested. When the man questioned the caller, the caller became belligerent. Police say that this is indeed a scam, and that no one should cooperate with the United Legal Investigation Bureau. Anyone who feels they are the target of a scam should contact their local police department immediately.

Thank you so much for that information. When I questioned him, he too became irrate and hung up in my face saying that the police would be coming to arrest me in 2 hours and i just began to cry histerically and called him back trying to find out why he was saying these things to me. I have called the local police dept in my city and am waiting for an officer to call me back to give him a report. the only reason I believed him was because I do have an outstanding pay day loan and he had all of the details about it, the owners name of the company, my personal information etc., but then when i started crying he said he would work with me and put his job on the line and make sure i am not arrested if i sent this payment to him. he said he would give me until 4pm today and to call him and he would tell me where to send the money. How could he have all of the details of my pay day loan, my job and home information? this is so scary!

Denise, one thing to remember is you cannot be arrested for not paying an internet payday loan. Just in case you get a call from another agency threatening you with arrest, to do so is a violation of the fdcpa.

Gawd, I hate it when they try to pull this shit!

Denise, in your position I wouldn't send them dime one. They can't arrest you for owing money. And they can't [legally] do what they've done. Save the message, and consult a good attorney.

Please don't cry and don't be afraid-anyone who makes these kind of threats deserves a huge lawsuit-- the FTC has a complaint site--please report this Co. and what they have done to you --FTC won't represent you but will send you info on what you need to do to proceed--record any further conversations you have with this co. it will definitely come in handy Very Happy Very Happy

Sounds like a guy that called himself Jack Smith from united legal/united pay services from Jacksonville FL
It's the same story I got. But yet I was dumb enough to pay them some money because I was scared. But then I searched the internet and came across this site and I haven't paid them a dime more.

Bad, bad people...

I suggest taping the conversation (let them know you are) and request they send you documentation validating the debt they are attempting to collect. Under no circumstances should you send these people any money - they have proven repeatedly it is a scam. Keep your cool...

Familiarize yourself with the federal law pertaining to debt collection (Google search "Federal Debt Collections Act) . If after speaking with the representative you feel as though they violated the statutes by threatening arrest and/or threatening or actually contacting your employer, contact the Florida Attorney General's office and the Federal Trade Commission (ftc.gov).

The Florida Attorney General's office is currently suing the group associated with this phone number (go to myfloridalegal and search "Bass Associates"). You can file an online complaint at their website.

Good luck!

I have heard of United Legal, but not United Legal Investigations Bureau. I wonder if they are the same company.

Good find Cajun!
