What Info Should I Provide

In digging through my credit report, I found an entry on one of my reports for Park Dansen regarding an MCI account. At no time have I ever received anything from these folks, and I do not recall ever having an account with MCI. I did have a home phone at one time, but didn't sign up for any long distance, as I had a nationwide cell phone with free weekends...I have had this cell account for longer than I can remember (and the same number, as well). My credit report shows the account opened in 2003, and that the balance owed is $43. As mentioned, this entry only shows up on my Equifax report, and the only information I have is the information from my credit report, which includes Park Dansen's address, the date the matter was opened, the date last reported, the amount, and the fact that it is for MCI Communications with a partial account number.

I send a DV letter on the matter, and the response I have gotten from Park Dansen is a request for more information. They want:

My full name
My full address
My SSN
Who the account is in collections for
Full account number

Now, I have already given them in my DV letter the information I could give for all but the SSN. The only information is what I have on my credit report, as I don't even recall having this account. I am a bit uncomfortable providing my SSN to them. It's not like I have a very popular name...it is unique enough that I doubt they have anyone else by my name in their records!

What would ya'll suggest?

I would dispute it with equifax. See if you can get it off that way.

I think I will do that...dispute with Equifax. I just don't feel right giving them my SSN, especially when I seriously doubt it is a valid debt. I mean, I know I had a long distance plan sometime in the late '90s, but I know that was paid in full. I got my cell phone and dropped all of the extras off of my home phone...as well as changed the number (because I was tired of all the people asking for my ex).
