ALW Sourcing called me recently and stated they were attempting to collect an old debt. I was alarmed when I answered the telephone and they asked for me by my maiden name...I've been married for over 20 years!

The agency stated that they were trying to collect on a debt that I owed dating back to the mid 80's! I assured them I that I had satisfied the debt and I that I periodically run a credit report and this has never shown up. They gave me all the reasons why it wouldn't. They also told me that I would need to find where I had paid the account off. This set me off because we are talking about something that happened back in 1985 and it's 2008! Give me a break! Subsequently, I found a copy of the check and sent it to them but not before I was harassed several times via telephone calls and then I started getting letters in the mail. Let me also add that this was an attempt to collect roughly $400 - $177 account balance and the rest was interest charges for the last 23 years!

I would send them a cease comm letter immediately but have some fun with it:

Dear Mr. Collector,
I'm NOT GOING TO PAY this alleged debt. Ever. If all the grains of sands on every beach on every ocean said "NOT GOING TO PAY" in tiny red letters, it would still not be enough to express how much I'm NOT GOING TO PAY. Cease and desist your collection efforts, because I'm NOT GOING TO PAY.

I wonder if that CA would be stupid enough to attempt to sue her for that debt. I'm not sure; however, I'm pretty sure is safe to presume the SOL is up on that debt for any state.

I mean, come on! 23 years?
