Default collection call

hi all
i have a problem. last night my mother in law called me to say that someone called her looking for me and that if i did not call them back that they were going to come down to my job and humiliate me in front of my co-workers. first of all, i live in mass.
my in laws live in North Carolina. my fatherin law wrote the number down and got it wrong becuase he was so upset by the whole ordeal. also the caller told him that they were calling from mass. so i do not understand why they would be calling out of state and harrassing my in laws my parents are deceased
i never gave out there numbers or anything so i dont even know how they got their phone number (in-laws). so i can't even put in acomplaint because he never got the name. any suggestions would be appreciated.

Maybe have a look at your credit report and see who is collecting against you. There might be collection agency inquires which might shed a light.

Collectors have all kinds of ways of finding you. It is common practice for them to check your credit report to find information out about you and often they find family members, even sometimes they find your neighbors to call. Are you aware of any past due debts you have? Maybe you could start by pulling your credit report and seeing what's on there. It does suck that they are allowed to do this, but it is legal.

I'm not trying to be a smart-@$$; however, Do your in-laws have CID by any chance? If so, maybe they were just too upset to look back through it and see what number called them.

Definitely, do what SOAPLADY suggests, if your in-laws don't have CID. If you still can't figure it out then be patient, if they called your in-laws once, they'll do it again.

You may want to educate your in-laws that what this CA has done has committed their first violation of the FDCPA by telling them your personal business like that. Also, the threat to come to your job and "humiliate" you in front of your co-workers was a big violation too. Tell your in-laws to tell the CA not to call them any more. That SHOULD be enough to make them stop; however, it probably will not. If they call them again after they are told not to, then your in-laws may need to put it in writing. Or, once you find out what CA it is, you could put it in writing that they are not to contact any third parties regarding your business, ever.

Just a few suggestions. Keep us updated as to what happens with this, and if you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask.

well i checked my credit history from all the 3 bureaus a couple of bal lingering taking a while to clear those up but i could not find anything out of the ordinary. i called my mother in this morning, she is getting ready for her trip but told mr .williams if they called do not give out any info AT ALL AND TELL THEM NOT TO CALL BACK ANYMORE. so without the name of the ca i dont know who to complain to ,
but, something very interest the numer on the caller id mom took and gave to me to call, it was some IT processing company or something like that. so now i start to wonder is this some kind of scam? people do some scary stuff to find on the internet etc. what is to make me think they got my name somewhere else and trying to scam/scare me into paying them $$ i stopped putting things past people a loong time ago because that's the world we live in.

off to lunch. be bak
