I received a Sheriff's notice on my door over the weekend regarding a "Civil Process", and when I called the Sheriff's office to find out what this was about, they said that basically they are serving me papers from NorthStar Collection Agency, but that was all the information they had. I having trouble trying to figure out (before I get my "papers" tomorrow from the Sheriff) how I can contact Northstar. I looked on my credit report, but I dont see any account by Northstar. Any ideas on what I can/should do? Im pretty freaked out here, ive never been sued before!

Since you have already been sued, you must file an answer for it first and simultaneously file a motion for discovery. The motion for discovery would reveal all the secrets about the account. Also you must contact Northstar at the address given by Baker to find out more.

You definitely want to call your county civil court ASAP. If you do not show up at court they will get a default judgement against you.

Here is a great website with lots of detailed info on the civil court process, including your possible Defenses and negotiating a settlement or payment arrangement in court without getting a judgement - IF they can prove the debt properly through the process of Discovery.

It is for New York and so may vary in some details with your state.

If you need an attorney but can't afford one, inquire with your court about Legal Aid. You can get an attorney at little to no cost to you.
