Is it legal for a CA to leave a message at my place of employment in the general voice mailbox? Yesterday, Mr. Pierce from NRC left the following message for me at work...."this message is for (my name) and I need a return call today from you or your attorney regarding file # *******. If I don't receive a call back from you or your attorney today I will be forced to have to make a decision on your behalf that will not be in your best interest at all"

At a glance I'd say yes, what they did was illegal. If they knowingly left that message in a "general" company voice mail box that anyone could listen to, disclosing your personal business and asking for a call back from you OR YOUR ATTORNEY, they have definitely violated the FDCPA. I'm sure it wasn't a auto-dialer, or a recorded message they left; it was probably a live human being? Once they realized they weren't talking specifically to your work/home voice-mail, they should have left a very generic message for you to call them back. Or left no message at all in a public mail box like that.
I would have my attorney contact them. Not for the reason they would expect, though. He would be contacting them to sue them for FDCPA violations.
Still, I would contact them and ask what it's pertaining to, tell them not to contact you at work again, get their mailing address, and send them a debt validation and cease and desist letter. I would specifically mention in your letter the fact you didn't appreciate them leaving your personal business in a public work voice mail box like that.
Nosy people at jobs are too quick to find out other people's personal business these days. They don't need any help from CA's making it much easier to find out stuff about you to gossip about by leaving cryptic messages like that for you at work.

Thanks for the info....they definitely know it was a generic voice mailbox because the recording just states out department name.

Perfectly legal. Want the calls to stop? Then pay up.

Don't listen to "No Nonsense Collector"
It is NOT legal for them to contact your work like that and divulge information. Like most debt collectors, "No Nonsense Collector" obviously has very little knowledge of his "industry" and relies on illegal harassment tactics to do his "job."

Perfectly Legal? More like "Perfectly Illegal!"
And all you have to do to make the calls stop is send them a "Cease and Desist" letter. They are required BY LAW! to stop calling you once they receive it.
I really wish "Nonsense" would get a life! He must be out of debtor's prison on another day pass today. You know, the debtor's prison he went to because he couldn't pay his bills because, he claims, us debtors wouldn't pay our bills.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this is questionable also. Mr. Williams from NRC just left a message on my cell phone stating "I must return his call today to discuss the mattter before he forwards information to my employer and the situation will not work in my favor."

Save that message on your cell phone and show it to an attorney. They shot themselves in the foot by leaving it where you can save it. They can't contact a third party about it and even threatening to do is against the law as far as I know.

NNC is a troll krichards418, he/she/it wishes it were a collector but is not. It likes to pop on here to start trouble and leave without answering when we call it out on how full of crap it is. The best remedy is to ignore NNC.
