They are not from that long ago. Within the year. We only got one payment slip from each of them. A few days ago I received a notice from a collection agency on both of them saying that the respources for trying to collect have been depleted so they are going through such and such agency.
I am going to try to pay these 2 off but don't know if it would be better to pay the ones that haven't officially gone to collections yet.
Also, is one payment notice normal before going to collections?

You need to send a validation letter to the collection agency asking them to prove that they are legally allowed to collect on the debt and how they arrived at the amount they are collecting. Pull you credit reports first and see if these debts were charged off. If they were than the agency bought them for pennies on the dollar and I would not pay them anything until they make you a real deal if at all. If not, tell the agency that your will only deal with the hospital or Doctor of whoever you owe. Then try to work out arrangements with them.

I verified that one of the accounts was sent to collections and both are being collected through the same company so I am assuming they are both real.
I paid off one of them but I can't swing both. I am going to call the agency about the 2nd one and see if we can work out a payment plan.
