This place left a message for me to call them; someone with a thick accent (Indian?). I called 4 times and stayed waiting for someone to pick up 15 minutes each time. I have no clue who or what they are. I Googled and saw something like "Tac Car" or "Tacar" group??? All of the information from people stating they are receiving calls is from within the last week. Could it be some new agency dredged up??

Any clues?

So I finally got through to them just now. It is called the Takhar Group; you can Google them. Nigel Banks said he was calling from a "credit reporting agency" and was collecting on a debt of mine for BMG (the CD service) for $28.74. He said he needed me to take care of this by Friday or he will "hurt" my credit. I stated I have never used BMG service and if he had something claiming I owe them that he needed to send me a written notice. He replied that his company does not send notices, they only report to the credit agencies. HUH!?

He then tells me I need to call BMG and have them call him to say I never had an account.

File this under "Strange But True."

Oh wow...did I ever need that laugh. I am still going to contact BMG and advise them and I will also contact this Tahkar Group to inform them of their wrongdoings. Wow....just WOW!!!

hiya waterbug--

just a quick question for you....do you like money? Seriously...

because that one phone call right there just made them owe you at least $4000.

First, this is a Canadian collection agency, they have an office in Niagara, NY too. Chances are really good that if your state requires collection agencies to be licensed to collect there, that these guys arent licensed. Check with your state's secretary of state office to find out.

I would also be curious what state you live in because if its legal you should record their phone calls. Be careful though--these guys really will put this on your credit file a lot of the time, and it will be illegally done because you demanded validation of the debt, which they refused to provide. Their violations so far:

1--refusal to provide validation when asked-FDCPA violation

2--failure to send you consumer rights disclosure within 5 days of initial contact-FDCPA violation

3--threatening to place an unvalidated debt on your credit report-FCRA and FDCPA violation

4--claiming to be from a "credit reporting agency"-FDCPA violation

I would guess that there are other violations too--for example, they are required by law to tell you that "this is a communication from a debt collector, and any information obtained will be used for that purpose". It's called the "mini-miranda" and it is a FDCPA violation to not say that when they communicate with you. I would bet they didnt say that to you.

What we can do, if you like, is really put these guys in their place, depending on what state you live in.

I am in New York and according to consumer affairs, they are licensed. I sent a note to the e-mails I found on their site stating what happened and they replied as follows:

"Good afternoon Kristen..........Thank you for the attached. Our Compliance Manager will review the notes on the database, listen to the voice recordings and contact you shortly. Please be patient. Thank you.........Hardy"

Weird.

This has happened to me also. I live in GA. I asked for proof of this purchase, and was told that they cannot offer a phone number to BMG, and it will be redirected to them if I was to contact BMG. I am to pay them $31.67. I never ordered anything from this company or received anything. I was told it was purchased off the internet, and even if someone ordered I am still responsible. They were not allowed to supply me with any information of the purchase. Sounds like a SCAM

By U.S. law, if you request a written notice then a collection company has to send it to you within five days of initiating contact. I've started getting calls from Takhar too, and like you they also refuse to send a written notice. Even after telling them I'm not obligated to pay them without one. And no threats they make over the phone move me--one "blot" on my credit rating would do me far less damage in the long run than a potential identity theft.

I was also getting calls on my cell phone from 1-800-258-3214. I knew it was a collection agency but the connection was so bad I couldn't understand the message. I called them back today. It turns out that Tekhar Collections Services (the one in Canada and NY) is collecting for Checkmate. We are with T & C but haven't made our payments for 3 months because my husband has been out of work. This CA is not licensed in Arizona(I checked). So do I have any recourse? Should I file a complaint? Do they have to be licensed in AZ (where I live) to collect or just licensed? I am confused. I am a little dumbfounded that Checkmate, a storefront PDL would sell the account to a Canadian CA. How weird is that?

Fastcheese--

Don't do ANYTHING, don't send them any money, without doing two things: One, send them a certified letter with return confirmation telling them that you'll only communicate with them in writing, not over the phone. Second, tell them this on the phone AND demand a statement of your debt in writing. You're allowed to do both by U.S. law, and by U.S. law they're required to comply. The catch is that Takhar most likely WON'T comply--they won't send you a written statement, particularly. If they don't send you the statement, then the people calling you are NOT legitimate.

I talked to T & C today and we agreed they will not send Checkmate any more payments until we see if we get a response from this CA. I will send them a debt validation letter and see what happens from there. I figure worse comes to worse, they would just sell the account to a CA who is licensed in AZ in order to collect. If that happens, then T & C will resume payments. At least I know that if Checkmate has turned the account over to collections, that they probably aren't going to take me to court. I am going to do the same with AIS, even though they have already marked my credit. I am going to dispute that and notify the state banking dept that these 2 CAs are collecting illegally in AZ. Sound like a good plan?

You can also file complaints with the Federal Trade Commission and your state Attorney General's office.

This company is obviously hired by more than one company to collect their debts. I believe that in a lot of cases these are really old debts and by trying to contact you they are establishing a new contact with you so that the collection agency can restart the drop-off date on your credit report. The thing that pisses me off about this company is that when they called, I would answer. They would either hang up on me, or I would get a recorded message telling me to call them back as soon as I got the message. They never asked for anyone by name in that message nothing. 98% of the calls we get are for the people who used to have this number. I have tried to call this number and when I finally got a human (on my second attempt) they were definitely not in canada. The accent was more Indian or Pakistani than anything else. I had to repeat my phone number numerous times even though I was speaking very clearly. Turned out they WERE looking for me but by this time I was so frustrated with the inability to effectively communicate with this guy that I told him there was no one here by that name.
