How to pay off old debt?

In trying to pay off old debt, I've read frequently that people recommend trying to pay the original creditor, which I have done with success a few times now. I know that Southwestern Bell is owned by AT&T now, and I have an active account with AT&T, opened in the past year, and they never advised me that I had an outstanding SW Bell balance. Does anyone think I have the option to pay AT&T for this existing balance? Or should I just pay Midland?

Send a Debt Validation letter to Midland, make them prove you owe the debt and that they are legally able to collect upon this. There is a chance, if it is old, that southwestbell and ATT no longer own it, which is why you never heard anything from ATT. Either way, make Midland prove you owe it and that the amount is correct.

If they can prove it, then offer them a pay for delete which is you pay, they remove it from the credit reports. Make sure any deals you get in writing. Always send everything certified mail return receipt.

I guess you should ask for a debt validation to Midland first. As you're having an active account with AT&T you may start talking with them regarding the debt once you get the validated documents.

Listen what they has to offer and make the decision afterward. As the debt was originally from the books of Southwestern Bell, if you think the deal is fair enough you may request AT&T to pull back the account depending on the possibility.

Find out if Midland is assigned by the original creditor to collect on the account. You may be able to deal with the creditor if the account is only assigned to Midland. But if AT&T has sold the account off to Midland then you might have to deal with the collection agency.

Southwestern Bell sold their accounts to serveral different collection agencies. AT&T and southwestern bell no longer own the debt. They will however have a record of it at AT&T. If they do not show a record of it have them send you a letter showing you owe nothing for the account with the number or account number listed and a zero balance for the account they dispute the Midland Credit Management account with all three bureaus. Midland Credit Manangement will not remove an account and they allways verify with the CRA. If you want it gone you will have to get the documentation from att. I know this because I am trying to remove a SWB bill from Nov 2002 listed with Midland that they have the wrong date of last activity. Get the evidence first from att then dispute with the CRA's.
