Calling for an Unknown Person

About two years ago we had our phone number changed. About six months ago we started getting messages on the answering machine from someone who said they were a debt collector and they were looking for a Charlotte Hutchinson. We told them we didn't know her and they had reached the wrong number. The calls would keep coming about two or three times a month. We told them to please take our number off their call list and not to call anymore. The last call on June 1, 2007, I told the lady at Redline that I would be reporting the company to State and Federal authorities. She told me in broken english to "GO TO HELL". The matter has now been turned over to the Attorney Generals Office here in North Carolina.

Send a cease and desist letter to the collection agency. They must stop calling you after receiving the letter. Send it through certified mail with return receipt requested so that you have a proof of your actions. Here's the sample C&D letter.

In case you want to record their phone calls for a proof of their violations, check your state laws before recording.
