I just need to clean up my credit so that I can start to think about a car and a house. Many of may credit problems are because of stuff I did in college.

TinaMarie. The first step to achieving this is to get a copy of your credit report. Get a free one so you can see what is on it and start to dispute it.

Be aware of the SOL on your debts. If they are close to the reporting time frame, give a second thought before making payments. Out of moral obligations, I will always suggest you to pay them. But if there is a chance you can escape those debts legally, why invite troubles for it in case you default in payments on those accounts in the future.
Negative accounts once removed from the credit file will have no effect on your credit scores. They will get current even if there is a slightest payment activity.
