should my friend be worried if someone (a relative) asked for her ssn and then a couple of days later they have a new truck. they said they needed her ssn number for their taxes because they pay her to baby sit but i told her if i were her i would look into it because they may used her ssn to get that truck and my mess up her credit later in life.

I would definately look into that...she may have needed it for tax purpose but it does seem odd that two days later she had a truck...

I would definitely look into that. Have her pull up her credit report and look it over, make sure everything looks up to date. Also check on her credit cards and make sure they balance out. That's a little weird and it doesn't hurt to check that kind of stuff out anyway! I believe you get a few free credit reports every year online so have her look in to that!

see she has no credit at all and she's worried that they might mess up her credit without her knowing.

Maybe she'd want to put a fraud alert on her credit file, too. I'm a little paranoid, but I'd try to check local and federal benefit offices, and see if any new applications have been filed, too.

Follow morningstar's advice and also inquire about doing a security freeze on all three bureaus. It is stricter than a fraud alert. When a security freeze in in effect no one can see report unless you call bureau and give them a pin # verifying that it is a legal pull.

That does seeem very suspicious...but it could just be a fluke.

If they needed her SSN for their taxes, then she should have gotten a 1099, or a statement of what they are saying they've paid her!

(My thought is that they flim flammed their tax return) and used the $$ to get the truck.

When claiming daycare expenses, you have to have the SSI number of you paid it too. There is no form...you just put it on the tax return.

Maybe she filed her tax return and got one those instant refunds and then bought the truck.

I agree with you Soaplady---- The story sounds very believable and yet very, very convenient at the same time.I believe in giving someone the benefit of the doubt initially. Howver, if she does check her credit and finds something suspicious then she can voice her suspicions and get some answers.

I agree with Lorri and soapsuds.Although sounding suspicious,it is very plausible it was used for tax filing puposes only.

Soaplady - they need to give her something which states the amount they are claiming they paid her...

she has to claim it as income on her taxes since they claimed it on theirs...
