Trying to clean up my credit, where do I begin?

I moved this from the consolidation forum, seems better suited here. Anyways...

I have several negative items on my credit report, comprised of a few credit card accounts opened naively as a first time college student some years ago. These have all gone into charge-off. The rest are from a single doctor's office that has broken down my debt to them into many services/accounts and appears on my credit report about 5 times.

Well, I'm in school full-time and will be working a relatively low-paying job, but I will make enough to pay off some of the smaller debts.

Considering that some of them will stop being reported as early as 2008 and some in 2009, should I just kind of leave those alone and focus on the ones due to be removed in 2010 and 2011?

I have a lot of questions, so please bare with me. But how do I handle the charge-off accounts. Should I first talk to someone and see if they would agree (in writing) to change the status to "paid as agreed" or remove the account from my report entirely before actually sending the payment in full?

Also, how do I talk to someone at the doctor's office? Can I make the same agreement with them?

Any information is HUGELY needed as well as deeply appreciated.

Welcome to the forums Kas! You have some very good questions! In my opinion yes make sure u recieve a paid in full before paying anyone! Since these debts seem to be quite old I'd be willing to say they will settle on these debts! have u disputed any of the doctor's debts?? Try that and see what happens. Also, before paying anyone make sure to send them debt validation letters to make sure these debts are indeed owned by the CA!
Good Luck and ask any quesitons u have,
Ang

Several years ago, I was assisting my daughter in trying to resolve a number of long standing debts. I called or wrote to each creditor to request a settlement amount. Almost without exception, one was offered. There were several medical bills, and we settled in most cases for as little as fifty percent of the original amount owed. Keep a good attitude and ask; it can't hurt.

Do you agree with the late fees and charges tucked on each account by your creditors? If you find the charges disputed, verify it with the creditor before making any payment arrangement. This should bring down the principal balance.

Pay importance to those accounts that are recently delinquent. They will stay as a negative item for a longer period. Make sure that you have all the documentation about your account and a statement to prove that after the accounts are paid off, they will be updating your file with the bureaus.

Yep...I wanna know that, too!! I have medical bills, credit cards, etc. A BIG one, on my credit is Cash Call. Some things I have had removed ( cuz they were so old). Somethings will 'fall off' soon, too. Any advice on how to clean up and raise my credit score?
