Cannot get a free CR online

PostPosted: Sun Dec 09, 2007 3:34 pm Subject: Cannot get a free CR online

I went through annualcreditreport.com to pull up my reports today, because I'm planning to apply for a loan next week. Seems like a simple task, right?

So far, Equifax says they can't provide the report online 'for my protection'. OK... I don't have a fraud alert or security freeze on my file to my knowledge. On to the next likely source, TransUnion. TU wants me to confirm my identity using address history, account numbers, and SS number. The last two, no sweat, but for my address history they list three possible addresses, and I've never lived at any of them! Anybody know how to get ahold of a real, live human at TU, rather than that automated phone nightmare they use?

Update:

I did eventually get a report from Experian. They still have my ex-wife's name listed!!! Been divorced since 2000! And they still show me working for my old company [that the ex got in the divorce].

I disputed the 'spouse/coapplicant name'. Not certain what to do about the employment. I've been with my current employer seven years this coming Wednesday. You'd think somebody at Experian would've gotten a clue.

Well first of all unc, did TU also give u the option of saying none of the above in ur address history? If so, try that. I can't remember which one but when i pulled my report in April i had to call one of the bureaus and they asked a few questions then ok'ed it for me to see it online. Usually they'll give u a phone number to call cust service.
Now about Exp. u need to update ur personal information and use ur current employer.
Hopefully that will take care of that!
Very Happy
Let me know if u have any other questions,
Ang

Also wanted to say, one of the bureaus had my previous address listed as my husband's place of employment address. Question I don't recall EVER living there! Smile

Ok you will not be able to get reports online due to a address conflict. Send them a letter with a copy of driver's license, social security card, and a utility bill for proof of residence and tell them to mail you your free annual report. In your letter also tell them to update your profile with the provided info so you can access them online.

Here's the screen they gave me. It seemed as though they were giving me that option with the 'null' entry at bottom. No such luck, though. I tried every null entry I could think of, to no avail. That's the point where I tried to call them yesterday. I spent well over an hour trying to get through their automated voice-prompt maze in order to reach a live person.

I did finally stumble onto an entry in their system that mentioned their office hours were M-F, 8-5 or therabouts. Of course, I was trying to do all this on Sunday..... Figures. So I called back today at lunchtime and answered some questions for them. I got a girl named [supposedly] Jennifer, who had an extremely thick Mexican or Puerto Rican accent. She says they're going to send me a copy USPS, and that there was nothing she could do to get it to me any faster [like, maybe, online]. All righty then. I'll give it the 5-7 days and go from there.

Here's TransUnion's contact page. Not exactly intuitive, but that could just be me. The number you want to use to [eventually] get a real person is the 'dispute an item' line, 1-800-916-8800. I don't think the others will give you much more than voice prompts.

While I was mulling things over at Experian, I did dispute the personal info that was wrong. Funny that they don't provide a way for you to supply the correct information directly. Well, I'll wait for them to conduct whatever investigation they do before I go ballistic over the little stuff.

Right! I should live so long...

Seriously, Ang. Thanks loads for all your help. And everyone else who posted to help, who I haven't gotten around to reading/replying yet.

Thanks, Nelly. I'd think I should be able to find out who provided the information when I get the report. Shouldn't I?

The addresses usually are crazy.

I had an address in Cleveland Ohio listed for one of my previous addresses. I've never lived in Cleveland. I had to whine and argue to get that taken off.

The information provider usually isn't listed on there...At least in my experience. I had to drag it out of Experian during one of my b*tch fits. Smile

Looks like I have two out of three seeing things my way at present. I'll tackle Equifax in a day or so, when I feel more up to it. Hopefully, I can just deal with it online.

I wouldn't mind mailing documents, but it's not really practical for me. SS card I gots, but my lease and utilities are in the ol' Lady's name. And my DL has an address that's two generations obsolete. My town has been making all kinds of changes in order to upgrade our 911 phone system. Street names, numbering schemes, etc., have all been changing. Vermont DMV has advised me to wait until the changes are official before getting a new license, rather than spending $20 every time it changes. Thay say they'll be able to find me regardless, as the changes carry over to their systems. For the record, I've had four addresses in two years. Without moving.

I'll argue as much as required, but I whine to no damn body. Cool

Yeah...That's one of those fits where there is profanity involved and asking to speak to someone who knows what the heck they're doing to tell me how I can have an address in Cleveland when I've never even BEEN there.

If you and I ever meet face to face, please remind me to be really nice to you.

Also, I've been to Cleveland lots of times. You haven't missed anything.
