I am looking at getting an apartment some time in the near future. Of course my credit is toast. I've been in a dmp for 6 months now and i'm working hard at getting it better, my student loans just became current again, etc.
Anyway does anyone have any advice on what I can do to better my chances of getting an apartment?

Try getting a co-signor for your apartment especially if they go through what is called tenate data services which does run credit checks like we did for our rental.

I'd suggest roommates or co-signors. Both my boyfriend and I had BAD credit when we applied for our first apt. 4 years ago. Ask the complex if they do credit checks. Most places just want to make sure there isn't a previous eviction in your history, and that you make enough to afford the place. For example, our first apt. was so-signed by my boyfriend's mother because we had zero rental history. Although, we made, combined, over 3 times the rent amount, which is standard for how much income they require.
Bottom line, find out from the complex what kind of checks they perform first.
