How to fix wrong ssn entry?

I am glad I found this website. My story is similiar. I got an ein# many years ago..I had worked on and off as an independent contractor..so I was told to use the # ..for that ..it was suppose to be legal..and I could use it to get credit for my business..So, I had used the number a couple of times over the year. I recently got a little credit card..just $200 and was paying it on time. I went for a mortgage and the broker asked me if I had any credit cards..none were on my report. I said yes, I had one that I paid on time..He said well, it isn't on ...so call them to find out..I called them and when we went over my account..we found out I had put in the wrong digits..the last 4 were inverted, plus they didn;t have it as an ein but as someone elses ssn..I am scared now..I paid the acct. off immediately and tried to close it..they said it has be investigated before it closes. After that I called another credit I had..and the same thing..I had put in the wrong numbers at the end. So, I sent them a letter stating I made a mistake and change it correct it. Now, what is going to happen to me> I am scared too. I am trying to fix all this. I am not sure if there is another one out there..that I forgot about and it may be not paid? I am so confused..any advice..am I in trouble?

You're going to have to somehow prove that it was simply a mistake. Not only did this happen once, but twice. Mistakes like this get put on your credit report. When the second creditor reviews your credit profile, they may seek fraud charges against you, even if you paid on time, and brought the error to their attention.

Also, I've never heard of giving an EIN# to obtain a credit card.

Have you recently pulled your credit file to see what things you currently have?

Oh, thanks so much for getting back to me. What happened I used my ein# for some furniture I bought..then I was sent in the mail a capitalone card, that I used for quite a while. Not late. When I called them to find out why they never reported me to credit agencies..they stated..they had? So, we went over my account info and found out they had the last 4 digits of the ein# backwards..plus the bad part was it was written without the hyphens..EG: 12-345-6789..which it should have been but as 123-45-6789..which was picked up as a ssn..which belonged to someone else..this is when I got so upset. They told me not to worry, it will be worked out. I had been giving out my ein# without using my paperwork the last few times..and got the numbers mixed up..they are very similiar to my ssn.> Honest , mistake. If, I hadn't call them requesting a credit report..this would have gone on and on..and then what would have happened? I cannot understand why the person, if there is such a person..never complained about this?? I am still puzzled?

Just recently a co-worker referred me to a tax prepare, who was able to file our income tax by useing our last pay stub. However the last paystub didn't include the company's Ein#. So after my co-worker had taken on this mission to obtain this information. She was able to by contacting another employee within the company assumeing that everyone in the company shared the same EIN# because we worked for the same company. But after receiving my W-2's yesturday I notice that it didn't reflect the company EIN# that my co-worker gave to me. So I immediately notified the tax preparer to make him aware of the mistake. He responded your taxes were filed electronically and excepted by the IRS already, but give me the EIN# just in case something comes up later. Which makes me feel very concern, uncomfortable and scared, And I would like to resolve this matter asap to avoid any problem done the line.

I wasn't trying to make you look like a fraudulant person.

Could you first tell me what type of credit card you applied for. Using ein#'s are okay if they're for businesses purposes. EIN's are usually the presidents SSN#.

I'm just trying to explain to you what the procedure usually is when mistakes like this happen. It will get noted in your credit file, in case something like this happens again. When the second company starts their investigation, they'll also see that you made a mistake with another company. As you've already stated, they were nice, and took care of it.

I contacted the company and they were so nice. They told me they never report credit using ssn or ein# only the person's name and address..which is the correct one..I used my own name , of course, because I WAS NOT FRAUDING..It was an honest mistake. No fraud charges. they told me that is ridiculous. Why were I be frauding if I am telling them I made a mistake. IWAS HE ONE WHO FOUND IT! I am not screaming ..just trying to get the point across.. and as for using ein# to get credit.I was told that is ok..as long as I have a home business.

My first thought - have you checked your own credit report? Go to annualcreditreport.com and see what is on your report.
