yes i have advice.file criminal charges against this scumbag.he broke more laws than the FDCPA here.we are talikng identity theft big time.a couple of points.

1)she had nothing to do with this.
2)he took her cc number and charged an ungodly amount
3)i'm almost sure neither of you got anything in writing.

if she remembers the exact name of this turd.she can file id theft charges against him.that means jail time.make it happen.btw the addres for this criminal enterprise is on this very thread.use that in reference.do not let this bage of puss get away with this.he should be in jail, again make it happen.

They have been calling me for a year or more about something my step-daughter owed.....I have told them over and over not to call here because she does not live
here and they say "OK we will remove your name" and they never do. She has already paid the credit card off; but they are still calling.

Your company told me that "You are educated, you should have figured it out." What I fugred out is that your are a shady company that hires bullies to intimdate others. Your company has called my parents in another state, my ex's parent in another state for what? If you are that desperate to talk to me- call ME! I will be sending the cease and desist letter and hope that you are "educated" enough to figure out the the public is not going to be bullied. Everything is prelegal status-stop using this as an intimidation technique.

Thank you to everyone who has posted here. I recently began receiving phone messages from Tony at Northstar (no further company description) indicating that it was an attempt to collect a debt. A few years ago, I was getting calls for all sorts of names (none of them mine) to collect student loan debt. When I got my first message/call, I got nervous because I could not for the life of me imagine what debt I might owe (the messages don't specify, the phone call indicated a Capital One credit card - which I've never had). The first thing I did was go online and check my credit reports. They are pristine (thankfully). I put a fraud alert on them. I also called all my doctors to make sure I didn't owe them any money. I owe no other bills; except a mortgage, and I'm several months ahead on that.

I talked to a lawyer friend of mine, and she gave me the following advice:
1. Cease and desist letter (once I get more information)
2. Letter asking for debt details
3. Freeze your credit report so no one can access it without your password.
4. If you get called again, try to get as much information as possible from the caller. DO NOT give out any information what soever (haven't done that).

I also called Capital One (never have had a Capital One credit card) fraud department. They confirmed they had no record of me in their system. I explained what was happening, they told me to just hang up, ignore it. (WHAT? This is someone using their company name to defraud potential customers? C.O. isn't worried about their reputation in the community?) Interesting.

In addition, our county has a whole website devoted to helping consumer deal with debt collection and actions to take to protect our identity and information. I would bet that is available in other counties as well.

However, you all have provided some additional insight for which I am grateful. I called my parents and my grandparents, explained the situation and told them that under no circumstances should they give any information about themselves or me to anyone else.

Thanks for posting your comments, suggestions, ideas and concerns - it has been tremendously helpful to many, including me!

I bought a computer part from Northstars website and I am disappointed the product was not as described so I sent it back. Then they started harassing me by calling me expecting payment of $150 for a part I sent back and already paid for but want a refund..huh?!

<<<Just pay your debts you debtors.. and you won't have a problem.. Start acting like adults..>>>

I would if I had some of their bailout money coming.

But right now I have a different issue. NorthStar called this morning, and after the usual spiel, at a point when the caller obviously thought he had ended the call already, he began making comments to a co-worker, with some spicy comments about their supervisor, in X-rated language. I recorded it on my daughter's MP3 player and have stored it for safekeeping. Does anyone know what, if anything, can be done with something as priceless as this? I mean, I was fortunate to find it before my youngest son, who turns the answering machine on every time he notices a message flashing.

Why on earth would they be calling you? Do you owe a debt?

NorthStar called and the caller must have thought the phone was off after leaving a recorded message. He had a beef about something the supervisor did, and started railing about it to a coworker in unrepeatable terms. I'm saving it, but my question is, since it was inadvertent can it be used for any purpose?

Depends on your point of view. I got shafted a few years back on student loans, when I tried to find out information about consolidation. They sent me a notice that before they could estimate it, they would need "permission to inquire" about the loans, and I gave the permission, thinking they meant what they said. Before I went any further, I became aware of a change in status that gave me further grace for two years, and went through mail contacts and phone contacts trying to tell them I was no longer interested in consolidation. The result was, they did it anyway without my consent, then sold the loan through two or three hands in a shell game that an expert couldn't keep up with, and the repayment period doubled from 10 to 20 years, with no significant reduction in payments. The effect of that one action on my family's finances has been crippling.

The last lender holding the deal after it was all over? Fannie Mae, one of the infamous "too big to fail" lenders. That was 10 years ago. Now I saw recently where an announcement was made that Fannie Mae is "getting into" the student loan business. If that's true, what were they doing there ten years ago already? And how can they get away with something like that? I told myself for awhile it was because I didn't create a paper trail. But when they do it without consent, the question is, WHAT paper trail? There's nothing there to prove what they did, and nothing with which to make my case for it except to challenge them to show where there was any signature or consent.

I don't consider myself to have surrendered to cynicism at all, but I am one of many who have no sympathy for them.

Their calling me about credit card debt from Barclay's bank. They claim they are from the pre legal department. Everyday they call and tell me it is absolutely crucial that I call them before 5pm tonight.
