I have received calls from a Mr. Hazel from Paul Kupfrerstein and associates at work and home threating to garnish my wage and take legal action on loans I owe from payday loans.

Although I am aware of it, it is nowhere close to what this Mr. Hazel claims. (the amount he claims is 5 times the amount I know that I owe.

I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions.

Can you, if you recall, list what companies you borrowed from?

Also - if you are aware you have a debt, I would suggest contacting the creditor directly and working out a payment thru them. Avoid Kupferstein - nothing but a company that ignores and violates fair debt collection laws in both the US and Canada. I can guarantee that the amount they are charging you is illegal. And you can ask, but they will never tell you the company they are collecting for. Don't fret over their threats - they will say anything to get you to Western Union money to them. They cannot garnish your wages or take legal action against you until the mail you a letter telling you the amount and the creditor, and they have never sent one of those letters to a single person that has ever posted on this website. Contact that creditor you believe it is and see if they can tell you if they passed the debt on to Kupferstein. My guess is they wrote it off and Kupferstein's "associates" purchased the junk debt.

One question for you (along with lemons) - where do you live?

I received a one page letter via fax which is NOT a verification of debt. It just says they are the solicitor for the payday loan company I owe money to and have been retained. No other details , except the amount with no breakdown. I will be calling them to request a breakdown. It is telling me that I have till Oct 31st(tomorrow) to settle and prepared to delay court actions.

Here is a link to the debt laws of Canada (simplified to be easy to understand), which they MUST follow:

gov.on.ca/MGS/en/ConsProt/STEL02_045978.html

They like to claim their are a law firm and are not required to abide by this law. However, since they are collecting a debt, they are, by Canadian law, a "debt collector", and in that, they must:

And more. Know your rights and protect yourself. Until they send you the proper documentation, you cannot be sure just what they are charging you.

I have had many telephone calls and e-mails from various people who have been harassed and threatened by Paul Kupferstein's Law Office and his monions, and I thank you all very much.

Again, as Mr. Kupferstein is responsible for his staff's conduct, and as his staff are violating not only the Rules of Professional Conduct, but also the Criminal Code of Canada, and he is responsible for any damages you may have suffered.

Mr. Kupferstein's staff is not allowed to call your employer, your friends, your neighbours, your relatives, your parents or grandparents in order to collect this debt.

If Mr. Kupferstein's staff does this, you can sue them.

My firm would be most agreeable to being retained by anyone who want to sue Paul Kupferstein for harassment and damages.

I bill my time at $150.00 per hour, and I request a retainer up front of $500 plus 5% GST, and I look after all steps of the action.

The limit in Small Claims Court in Ontario is $10 000, but on 1 January 2010, that limit rises to $25 000.

And Mr. Kupferstein is not going to be thrilled about any matter such as this get in front of a judge.

you can reach me at deleted

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yeah, this M Hazel is redic. He's called me at work and left about 3-4 messages stating that I need to respond to his mail requests and by not doing so will only get me sent to court and blah blah blah. I have call display at work so when I see his number come up, I just forward it to voice mail. I'm actually in the process of going through a bankruptcy...not the best thing but I had an ex who totally screwed me over and left me with over $40,000 in debts and I have nothing to show for it. Live and learn.

I just received a phone call from Mr. Kupferstein's office. They stated that I owe $3000 (which is much higher than the amount owed) and stated that I am being sued for fraud tomorrow and that my bank account will be frozen. I am a single mother who is currently unemployed. Can they sue me and freeze my account? I am scared to death.

if they do sue it will not be that fast.this place seems to rely on scare tactics instead of real legal action.it's an empty threat report them don't pay them.
