Hi, well it is great that you decided to consolidate. You will be on your way to lower interest rates and lower monthly fees.
From my experiences with consolidation, I believe that you do have to pay a small administrative fee. The size varies but I have never encountered a non-profit consolidation company that charges you more than 50 dollars for this fee.
Some companies have monthly fees so you need to inquire with each company individually in order to learn their specific policies regarding fees.
If you contact 877-No-Debt, you will get in contact with a customer service agent that is able to provide you with assistance and more specific information that could help you determine how much you will be paying.
Now to answer your other question, I believe they charge a small fee because they need to support payroll for staff, technology expenses, and other incidental expenses to run a consolidation business. As you may know, running a business is far from free so they may ask for a nominal fee in order to help offset the cost of these expenses. If you choose a non-profit company, I am almost certain that your fee will not be high.
