The fiancee was recently contacted by CBA's automated phone service. She was told she owed AT&T ~ $120.
In April 2007, her identity was stolen and an AT&T account was opened in her name. She was alerted by AT&T, who sent her a letter informing her of the account. Of course, the letter arrived three months after the account had been opened.
She immediately took care of the situation, even having the local police call AT&T to confirm that this was a case of fraud. AT&T told her that the account was closed, and all was fine.
SO, now the call from CBA comes, with no prior contact from AT&T or CBA. Credit Report shows the CBA account as an unpaid debt in collections. CBA told her to contact AT&T, and AT&T can't find the account.
I have essentially no credit, as I've paid and closed all my accounts. The Fiancee had very good credit, but this can't help. We need good credit, as I just graduated, and am about to start a new job, so we have to move.
We don't have any knowledge about credit agencies and such. Can anyone help us? What should we do? Advice?

Send CBA a DV letter and have them prove that she owes the debt.

You should have your fiancee file a identity theft complaint with local law enforcement if she has not already done so. Then forward a copy of the ID theft complaint with case number to the CA in question.

I am an agent for them, they are very professional. If you have sent payment to the clietn then all you have to do is proved them with Proof Of Payment and they will contact the client and delet from system

It was a case of Identity Theft not an account that was already paid.

Thanks for the advice guys!
Linda, when CBA originally contacted the fiancee via telephone this last week, they were very unprofessional. When my fiancee explained that the AT&T account was fraudulent, and had been taken care of over a year ago, she was offered no help whatsoever, and given no details. Rather, she was simply told to contact AT&T.
She has faxed AT&T a copy of her credit report in which the potentially negative item is listed. Still, AT&T cannot even locate the account. Every person contact at AT&T has neither known the details of this account nor how it can be resolved.
CBA was contacted just yesterday, and an agent claimed that the debt is being deleted and in the process of being removed from the credit report-- a process that can take up to 3 months!?-- as of the 2nd. Why the 2nd, when AT&T has made no progress in even being able to locate the account, and CBA had not been contacted since the initial call, which did not occur on the 2nd? We fear that the agent may have been dishonest, attempting only to end the call quickly. It seems a bit of a stretch to infer such intentions, but not after going 'round and 'round with various credit card companies immediately after the identity was stolen last year. We were told different stories every time, and had we believed the first one, and had not been persistant, we'd have been in big trouble.
We will contact CBA again tomorrow and inquery about the claimed debt. Hopefully the response will be consistent with the previous, so that we don't have to waste even more time. If CBA's story doesn't change when a new agent is contacted, is there anything that can be done speed up this removal?
Thanks!

UPDATE:
So, after CBA informed us that the account was being removed, Bay Area Credit Services contacted us attempting to collect the debt. We were unable to obtain any information regarding the means by which they had obtained the account.
We sent both agencies DV letters through registered mail. Today we heard back from CBA, who have dropped the account as of the day that they received our DV letter.
On one hand, this is excellent news, but on the other, WTF? Why does it take a letter invoking federal law to get an obvious fraudulent account cleared? Why did they have this account to begin with?
Now we just need to wait and see what happens with Bay Area Credit Services...
Thannks all. Your advice has SAVED US. We are trying to move right now, so this will give us evidence that the negative item on our credit is bunk. THANKS!!!!

These kleptomaniacs where instructed by ATT to come and harrass me over an amount they said I owe them. I do not owe them any such amount as I had returned the ATT equipment as required by ATT. I sent the thieves a copy of the UPS tracking showing that the equipment was actually delivered and told them to let me go...in peace.
I am surprised that they have reported me to the 3 collection agencies. Does anyone know if I can sue these rogues?

I received a message about a month or so ago from this company. The message said that it was in regards to an urgent matter. When I finally called back I learned that it was in regards to an old Sprint bill. The female I spoke to was really rude because I told her that I had no idea when I would be paying on this account. She then informed me that they will be calling everyday until the debt has been paid. I politely told her that that would be fine because I will not be answering the phone. I have not received a phone call from them since. I don't even know how they got my number. Since then I have been doing some research to validate them. Just as soon as I can I am going to call Sprint to find out who they sold my debt to.

To try snd sum it up, I had an ambulance bill on my credit report going back to 2001. It was listed with Collection Agency A. It rolled off my report as it had been 7 years, now I go to check my report and see CBA listed on there for the same debt and amount.
CBA lists the debt as opening in January 2008, with date of status and reported since June 2008. I know they purchased the debt from the previous agency. Are they allowed to do this since the initial seven years have passed? Thanks.

I received a letter from this company claiming I owe DS Water of North America. We used to have water delivery from Belmont Springs but closed the account two or three years ago. We do not owe them money! Should I send a letter to CBA asking them to validate the debt or just ignore it?

This organization is a crock up to all manners of skullduggery. I had a water service from belmont springs and they didn't or couldn't even tell me my service address nor what this bill was for. I closed my service in june of 2005 and to my astonishment i get these harrasing phone calls and letters but they can't credit report me without having a social security number to use. Always ask if they have one on file. The person i talked to there was rude and unintelligible then obnoxious when i asked to speak to a supervisor they disconnected the call. Never deal with future fastfood employees and the unethical organizations.

Then cant talk to a person like a human..then have a unholy machine call your phone at all hours..then put you on hold..then they ask me why i called? wth? ''thank you would you like fries with that letter''? They wouldn't even email me !!

On the ambulance bill: No, that can NOT do that. No matter who has the account, it can only be reported for the 7 years. I would DV the CA and once you get the green card back I would dispute with the CRAs, I would enclose a copy of the older credit report to show them that they reported the item and that it already fell off. They will either drop it or the CA will verify it. Well, if they verify it and it doesn't drop off you have BOTH the CA and the CRAs....for one the CRAs should have removed it on their end w/o even contacting the company, since you clearly show them it is a case of illegal reaging.....if need be you could sue BOTH the CA and the CRAs for continuing to report this aged account.
As for the last post, I agree. I hate those calls that are a recording asking you to hold, or those that call and tell you to call them back. I am sorry, but I have a life and my time is precious. It is the ultimate of rude for them to call and put me on hold. I always hang up, if they want to talk to me they can darn well be on the other end when I pick up.
