Hi,
I am new here. My husband and I have an AAFES Star account on our credit report. We would like to settle.Has anyone gone through this with AAFES?
How much are they willing to settle for , persentage wise? Anything anyone has to say would be helpful.
Thanks

Ah, yes! I know exactly what you're talking about! My fiance was in the Navy and has one of these accounts. He hasn't paid his off yet and they can be pretty annoying.
Cryptowizard should be able to help you out more with this question I'm sure you can work out a payment plan with them. Most likely they will reason with you--give it a shot!

Have you tried contacting them directly to settle the debt? I know that they give you PLENTY of opportunities to work with them before they come after you like that.
I'm also assuming you're out of service now, because if you were still active duty I'm sure your Commanding Officer would have settled this for you.

Thanks so much for your replies.
I found this on this website about AAFES:
" To avail the benefit of debt settlement a person has to pay 3% of the balance."
http://www.debtconsolidationcare.com/aafes.html
Am I understanding correctly that I need only pay
3% of what I owe to satisfy this debt?????

To be honest I haven't check up on this, but I am willing to bet that for a 3% payment towards the full balance they will not put a Charge Off on your credit report (NOT good!). However, I don't see them giving you a satisfactory marking such as PAID SATISFACTORILY unless you pay the outstanding debt.
Never forget (with any creditor), that just because you can't pay the debt right now ... or because they've "charged off" ... that doesn't mean you don't owe the debt. You'll still have to pay back your entire balance due unless you make some kind of arrangmenet with them.
Have you tried to consolidate this bill as part of a consolidation loan? If you haven't looked into that option, please look into that.

This forum is called "Debt Consolidation and Settlement". A settlement is often less than the entire balance you owe. I wasn't saying 3% TOWARDS the debt. I was asking about paying only 3% of the amount owed to settle the debt. I got this off this website: " To avail the benefit of debt settlement a person has to pay 3% of the balance."

I don't mean to sound rude or anything, but you do not always have to pay off the entire balance.

Hi mosslinc
Welcome to the forums.
You can clear your debt either by consolidating it or by settlement. But settlement has negative impact on your credit report in comparison to consolidation. Consolidation process is much easier and has better benefits than the settlement.
Please have a relative study of these two programs in the link given below before you choose for any of the program.

Is there a statute of limitations on AAFES debts? Are they bound by the normal credit collection rules?
