Default 1 800 741-2100 SCAM!!!

Under NO circumstances should anyone return a call to any outfit calling with a toll free number, claiming that you need to return their call FOR ANY REASON! Any LEGITIMATE collection agency will contact an individual VIA THE US POST OFFICE, in a letter -- often, registered mail. These calls that come in from someone posing as a collection agent, or even as a representative from a law firm saying they have some payment FOR you, are BOGUS!!!! They are just phone 'phishing' scams, and if you call back, you're very likely to be the victim of some ID theft or credit scam.

Default 1 800 741-2100 SCAM Post Script ...

PS on this 'phishing' scam. I received a call this morning, and a message was left on my machine. Curiously, the caller's name, and the company he was claiming to represent, were 'garbled' (specifically, made 'nasal'; I'm guessing the caller was holding his finger against a nostril, when stating his name and the name of the company he was representing ...), but the number, 1-800-741-2100, and the extension 2303, were perfectly clear, as was the advice that the call was 'urgent' and the number to return the call was toll-free. Nowhere in the message did the caller state clearly who the call was for -- that information was also 'garbled' (and trust me, as everything about RETURNING the call was clear, it was neither a problem with the call's connection, or my machine!!!)

Again, any LEGITIMATE collection agency will MAIL a request for payment, and any LEGITIMATE legal firm will MAIL advice regarding any contact they wish, from you. AVOID RETURNING ANY 'Toll Free' calls, whatsoever. LEGITIMATE firms do NOT use such methods for either debt collection, or for adivising individuals of any financial gain due them.

Default Phone call

I just was notified by my sister, with whom I have NEVER lived with, that she received a phone call from LTD, looking for me. I have no idea what this company is, or how they got my sisters telephone number. What can be done about this issue?

Default LTD COLLECTIOS?

I've starting receiving calls asking to speak with so-and-so, who is my ex-wife. They ask for her by her madien name which she restroed after the divorce.

The divorce was 15 years ago and she had never lived at the address/phone number where they are calling looking for her. The divorce was about 15 years ago, I have had no contact with her since and do not know if she is alive or dead. We never had any children together.

How do I make these calls stop?

Legally speaking, you can draft one cease and desist letter and send it to their mailing address. They are contacting you because they have your name in their contact list that your ex might have given.

If this doesn't work, call the supervisor of the company and explain the situation. They will likely remove your name from their system. Make sure that your wife has not jointly signed this debt with you. If this was done, you are equally responsible for this debt in their eyes. I assume the SOL is past by now.

Default SOL

How long is a Statute of Limitations? And what happens to the debt after it runs out?

Default LTD people are out of control

I got back into town this evening and my dad informed me that a place with a 1-800 number had called him looking for me and that they were very rude. They would get even more upset when he would not give them my number.

So, tonight I called the number. Apparently when they called my cell number before, it blocked their 1-800 number so they could not get thru to me. The women was very very rude the entire phone conversation. Apparently there is a small amount that I owe from a car accident that I was unaware of and have never received anything in the mail about.

She kept demanding that I pay something tonight, that it was not going to go away. I asked her to send me something in the mail so I had something on paper saying what I owed and I would take care of it at that time. She immediately got even more rude with me when I said that! She insisted I pay something on it tonight. I said I am not going to just pay something I have never heard of until tonight just because she told me to. She got even more upset.

She asked what the name of my bank was. I would not give her the info, she got crappy with me. She asked for my place of employment, I would not give it to her. She replied in a snotty way, that they could find that out very easily anyways. I just said, well good luck with that.

I told her to not call my fathers number again or he was going to file harassment charges against her company. She said that he could not do that and she could call him as often as she needed to get in touch with me. I don't even live near my father. And we are still not sure how they got the number.

When she continued to tell me I had to pay something on it tonight, I said until I get confirmation in the mail in letter form in regards to this, I was not going to pay anything. Of course, this got her even more crappy with me. I told her not to contact me until I received the letter and contacted them back to take care of it. She said that they would call me everyday until it was paid in full. I said, call all you want, wasting your time until I get the information in the mail.

She got super crappy with me again and when I started to say something...she just hung up!

Did I handle this alright or what can I do to avoid having to put up with this type of behavior again? It is not like I am trying to avoid paying it or something, I just want some proof on paper of what is owed from the accident.

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks

Default debt

You handled this exactly right. You need proof of the debt in writing before you pay. They may want an amount more than what you owe. Get it in writing. Keep us posted KYSIDE38

Default Pending Lawsuit with LTD Financial

I too had a run in with this company. In January of this year, Mr. Thomas Moore contacted my parents home phone number asking to speak with me. I had not lived there in 4 years. They provided my new phone number to him. I never heard from him, but my parents said he kept calling demanding to speak with me, but would not leave a callback number. Well one day they called and my mother lost it and threatened legal action if he called again. She gave him my contact information again. He called one day and left a message. When I called back, all I got was an answering machine so I left a message. Not 20 seconds after I hung up he called back. He stated he had an account of mine from Gateway (Citicard) in the amount of $1995. I needed to make payment arrangements. I advised him that I had purchased a laptop computer in 2001 and financed it through Gateway (Citicard). I had a lot of financial trouble and did not pay it off and in accumulated interest and late fees. I asked if I set up a payment arrangement to pay $250 per month. He said it had to be at least $400. I agreed and he sent the agreement to me in writing. I made the first payment. Two hours after I did, he called and asked when I would pay again. I said I am paying in accordance to the agreement we have. He said the agreement had been voided. When I asked why he said his supervisor voided it because I didn't return it signed. I said there is nothing stating I had to do that. He said yes there was on the second page. Of course, I never received a second page. He then pressed me about when I would pay again and I advised I am sticking to the agreement and paying $400 per month until it was paid in full. The next day, my neighbor, who is in her 80s, called me to say a Mr. Thomas Moore called her looking for me and that I needed to call him. He told her he has not been able to get ahold of me and I had an account with him that needed to be paid. Too bad for him though her son is a lawyer. She was frightened and called him. He came by that evening and called Mr. Moore on my behalf. Mr. Moore lied and said he had not spoken to me and I had this woman listed as a next of kin. Lies! He advised him not to call any number but mine again and to adhere to the fdcpa or we would file a lawsuit. Mr. Moore agreed after a 4-way call with a "supervisor" who also agreed to renew the original agreement.
paid another payment the next month and asked that LTD send me documentation on the debt to keep on record. They did, but apparently someone put a little too much in. There was documentation of all of their phonecalls as well as times and dates. Documentation of my mother giving them my new contact information. Most interesting thought was thr 37 calls to several of my neighbors and people in my city with the same last name. I was appalled. I called a couple of them and asked if they were contacted by them and they said yes. I could not believe it. I called LTD and asked to speak to Mr. Moore, but was told he no longer works there. I advised them of what had been sent to me and the woman said "oh, you should not have been sent that." Guess what? I was sent that. I made the final payments directly to Gateway (Citicard) and advised them of the situation. The sent a paid in full letter with a ton of apologies. I am currently working with Legal Aid to file a formal suit against LTD and Mr. Moore for violating the FDCPA, harrassment and divulging personal financial information to individuals not directly involved. It may not go anywhere, but thise company needs a kick in the pants.

Default LTD

After my state's attorney general and Texas' attorney general got after LTD back in 2005, LTD passed my account back to their client, to whom I do owe money. I'm still unemployed and in a middle of a social security disability appeals process. Which is almost as frustrating as dealing with LTD.

Well, my account is now back with LTD again after a 2 year hiatus. Only this time they are using the number 1-866-998-2500. Their calls state that it's a very important business matter and is not a sales call. Then when you call back, they refuse to note your account as "inability" to pay. It is "refusal" to pay. Talked to Albert, extension 6467 Thursday. Was gone all day yesterday to have a series of medical tests conducted at the hospital. Came home to a bunch of messages left by (?) - no matter how many times I replayed her message, I couldn't catch her name.

Called her today and she proceeded to argue with me. Seemed to know all about my medical condition....and NONE of my medical providers are their client. So I know she was pulling it out of the air. Said they could call as often as they wished any time, any day.

So I talked to her supervisor Luis Hermandez who called me a thief and a liar and a harasser for not paying my account. Told me he could contact me as often as he wished. I said no, you can't. Told him I'd contact my state attorney general and Texas state attorney general to report him. Probably would contact the BBB and FTC. He told me I couldn't do that, I WAS the thief and harasser. I said, "Luis, just watch me." Then I hung up on him.

Information to BBB, FTC, and both my state and Texas' state attorneys general just went out.

Sharon B.

I've been getting calls from the same number for quite a while now, but they never leave a message.

Should I call them back?
What happens if I don't?

"Then when you call back, they refuse to note your account as "inability" to pay. It is "refusal" to pay."

Why does it matter if you are marked down as refused to pay? Is it a legal term with consequences or something?
