allied interstate has been calling me for at least two months. Their company name shows up on my caller ID, but no message was ever left, so I assumed "telemarketer." Finally, one day I was home when they called, so I answered the phone. Turns out they are a debt collection agency, attempting to collect a debt for someone who shares my last name, but not my first. They provided some information on the debt, and I confirmed that the person they're looking for is not me. I figured I was done with them, but I figured wrong. Over the next few weeks, I got at least a dozen calls (no messages) from them. Finally, a woman left a message with a name and number. I called back and once again conveyed that this debt was not mine. They assured me they would remove my phone number from the record. Ha. They called again today and I happened to be home. I was quite angry, and demanded an address and supervisor's name so I could send a letter to stop these harassing calls. "Victor" said he could not do that, but made a note to not use my phone number any more. I'm not holding my breath, and assume I'll be getting more calls from them.
The most frustrating thing about this (besides the obvious) is how did they get my phone number in the first place? I suspect they looked in public phone records and found me because my last name is the same as the woman they're looking for, and perhaps I live in the same area. Maybe they assume I'm a relative (which I'm not). I have taken the step of checking my credit report, and am relieved to see that I'm not the victim of identity theft, but how much longer will this go on? How many times to I have to tell these people to stop harassing me?It doesn't appear that they have my Social Security number associated with this account, but they're using my address (yes, I also got a debt collection notice in the mail), and my phone number. They are associating this debt with me, and I'm concerned how much further this is going to go. I feel powerless to stop it.
